Hi guys
I think my voltage regulator went bad. Alternator voltage is always keeping 15V. I feel unsafe about running it this way, fear of damage of some module. Would it be better if I used battery only and kept the alternator positive cable disconnected, charging the battery home via tender? The regulator is coming to Brazil in 2 weeks. |

It must be really bad over there. There's so much ash and smoke in the air from that fire and it's wafting into the valley. Davis is like an hour an 20 from Napa, but the air is terrible here. Not 460, but still in the 170s. |

Disconnected alternator positive cable due to bad regulator.
Found the exhaust manifold heat shield above alternator loosen, held only by one bolt (of three). Put the new bolts on, heat shield secured. Went for a drive without battery charging. No problems. Now waiting for the new regulator to arrive. |

Back down the Rabbit Hole for me.
Wrapped up all the under hood maintenance on Friday, went for a short test drive, came home and topped off the coolant and checked the other fluids. Next morning take it out for a real test, that went fine, but on the way home I get the rear brake lining too thin warning. Back into the air we go.

Get a cover for that filter. It gets dirty real quick where its located. That way you are not scratching the back of you hand so often when replacing/cleaning. Also look into geting a 2115 MM belt vs the 2120 belt that comes with the kit. Mine slipped alot.

If you disconnect the charging cable you need to disconnect the little feedback wire as well to prevent it from generating maximum possible voltage. I think this car has the ECU controlling excitation voltage and it may have a fail-safe mode, but I know on a conventional alternator with on-board voltage regulator, leaving the feedback wire connected without the large charging wire will kill the alternator.

I just returned from a ten-day 1500-hundred mile round trip, Richmond, VA - Jacksonville, FL, I-95 all the way. Trip notes:
1. On the way down, my one-quart-down oil light came on. I added a quart of OEM Castrol to the resident Liqui-moly. Not sure if that's bad or indifferent for my engine. Still under 3K since the last oil change. (My current indy shop twice refused to top off the oil at the last service. Drove out with the e-dipstick at half full. Maybe I need a new indy). 2. I passed 77K miles. That's 51K in just under four years of ownership, with overall average of 7.7K miles per year of life (build date 10/10). 3. Trip MPG: 20.4. 3. While I cruised in the center or right lanes at normal highway speeds -- 75-80 mph -- many cars would approach quickly on the left, pause behind my rear quarter panel, accelerate, pause again in front of my front fender, then shoot off. What to make of that? 4. At literally every gas stop, two per leg, a Black guy (just citing the truth here) would give me a compliment or and/or ask about the car. I'm as White as they come. It was always a pleasant moment in the annals of race relations. 5. In contrast to my former e36 and e46 M3s, the e92 is a comfortable long-distance cruiser, as well as all-around daily driver. BMW achieved a miracle with our beautiful cars.
