M3 n00b: M3 vs. M3
My friend and I swapped cars for today. He drives a E46 M3, among many other nice cars, 6MT with upgraded suspension, race bucket seats, and a SSK (UUC's i believe)
I dont know but i really wish i bought a E46 M3 instead of the E92. I have to say I understand when people said they were disappointed with E92 after having owned a E46 M3. Clutch was much easier to operate in E46 than E92, shifts are a lot smoother (i have to give some of the credit to UUC's SSK though). Steering was more precise, the car felt like a Z4M, very tossable, it's so much fun. a go-kart!! i admit i like the less-refined M3 than my current M3. but keep in mind that this is based on "street fun" not track or really spirited driving. Maybe i'll have my friend post his impressions on the E92 compared to E46 haha i like to believe E92 M3 has some animal inside of it that's at least as much fun as E46 M3... in any case high revving engines FTW PS my balls are squished coz of the fucking seats now |

I would say your comments and opinions have indeed hit the mark and are very accurate to the truth. The new M3 was designed to appeal to a much wider audience than the E46 M3, like you said it's more refined, more comfortable and easier to drive. Your comments that the old car is more of a go-kart are correct and it's one of the reasons why I never considered the M3 until now, I hated the old car with a passion. Don't misunderstand it was a very good car but too raw for my liking with brittle ride and a engine note which screamed instead of sang.
P.S. Is the E46 M3 of your mate stock or modified in any other way because if so then it's not a fair comparison. |

interesting observation, but it depends on the individual, after driving the new M3 E92, for roughly a little over an hour, I prefer it over the E46 M3, I like the refinements,
1. stereo sound so much better, without the HK rear sub rattle 2. faster and more usable torque 3. more supple ride, while providing more grip 4. looks better yes I did notice a bit of a numb feeling in the steering opose to the old but still good and the shifter was a bit notchy compared to the old but still good, the only thing I was dissapointed in was the straight line performance, for a V8 I expected more. |

I actually have the opposite take. Stock vs. stock the E92 felt more aggressive to me. I haven't driven an E46 with the competition package (which I probably would have preferred), so I can't comment on how it compares. I skipped a generation between my late 95 E36 M3 and the E9x because the E46 just felt less responsive and a little too forgiving for my taste. An E92 seems to transition better, has a more neutral feel, has more power to rotate the car and pull out of corners and higher overall cornering limits. It's not a 996 GT3, but if you set steering and EDC to sport and switch the stability control off, the car has a very aggressive feel IMHO.

So are you saying you don't like the E92 M3? it states "you drive a POS you would like to trash" I've had 2 E46 M3's and I'm waiting for my E92 now, that worries me a bit because I loved my old M.
