2011 Frost Gray E92 w/performance pkg. My thermostat went out at 70K. I did the water pump, hoses and belts while I was in there. I didn't change the idler pulley / tensioner... was I supposed to? The old pump impeller put a few grooves in the internal housing, and was a little chewed up. I bought the "refresh kit" from ecs. It came with a new expansion tank which I swapped out. Not sure why, tho old one looked perfect. I think the block had two drain plugs that were tough to access. I drained the system and bits of junk came out. I assume bits of the synthetic impeller.

The tensioners and the pulley's attached to them seem to last a long time, but at 8 years and 70k miles you should definitely change out the idler pulley aka "deflection pulley" in BMW speak because odds are good that one on your E9X M3 is going to fail you soon.

I had my thermostat go out while drifting in snow at 97k miles but while I was in there I replaced the water pump with a graf one with a metal impeller. Took me less than an hour to do.

Just doing mines now with after market too. My code reader was pulling a code on it so I’m doing it at 90k. 2013 coupe.
Pretty simple if you have worked on your car for. 4-5job out 10 being the hardest. Really just taking your time and getting the coolant out. It will be semi messy regardless how carful you are so have a pan down low to catch some coolant. |

Mine's at 137,000 miles, and still not making any noises and still seems tight, but I'll probably do it next time I do belts/pulleys. It still seems fine but plastic impellers bother me and there's a nice OEM upgrade part out there from the GT4.
The idler and tensioner pullies were in rough (by my standards) shape at ~90k, and got changed then with the tstat. I also did the rad and hoses at the time, probably overkill but I also track the car occasionally. It still does fine on track with 47,000 miles on everything but the water pump, and honestly you just don't hear about these being a problem much.

Mine developed a small drip which resulted in a low coolant warning. This occurred between 125k and 150k miles. One could see drops of coolant below the pump with a flashlight.
