Does anyone have experience running a powered sub/amp combo?

Hi everyone!

So call it a mid-life crisis or a renewed interest in listening to certain music louder... I recently decided I want to try to add a little bit of extra bass to my car that's equipped with individual audio. But I don't want to go all out and buy a full sound system upgrade and I also want to maintain the stock individual sound functionality intact. Does anyone have any experience installing one of these powered subwoofer combos from Pioneer, Fosgate, JL, etc.? I feel like one of these would be perfect for what I want but I'm not really sure what I need to do to get it running properly or if its a simple plug and play solution, which would be great. Any other suggestions along these lines that anyone can offer are appreciated as well. But I'm definitely not trying to spend much more than 300.00. Below is a link to an example of what I'm looking to buy. Thanks guys/gals!

Yeah...easy. I've done it on several of my Bimmers. I think the individual audio is great in these cars. But having a little more kick on the sub-100hz range is greatly appreciated for an audiophile.

You need to be good with wire diagrams and understand what you are doing with a bit of finesse.

In my experience, I would recommend a ported sub over a sealed for a sub located in the trunk and no direct line of sight. The amp needs to have hi-line/hi-level in. The one you posted looks to have that--I just recommend a ported box setup.

Awesome! I really appreciate the reply. I did read somewhere that a ported one is best but have not come across too many options. Are there any links to an installation DIY that you can provide??

Me personally, I don't need any installation DIY. But I can certainly help guide.

I can help assist with amp/harness location and wire color and such--if that makes sense, ya?

There might be a couple of strategic wiring methods too that I can suggest. For one, I was able to hide my amp very well in the back of my vert. A 12" box is what I chose to go with and it's great paired with a 500 watt d-amp.

I think total I spent on my setup was $350. But things have shot up in price!

Here is a 10" box that is ported. I have the 12" version of this paired with a alpine DVC sub.

Choose your flavor of sub and make sure to get the dimension of mounting depth.
Then figure out an amp.

I bought this amp $150 a couple years ago..and wow..this has gone up in price so much!

Now your individual audio amp is in a convenient location in the back.

You'll have to report back some wire colors and pin locations, then I can confirm which correct diagram/schematic applies to your e90.

I have underseat subs driven by a JL audio amp, if you want to feel the bass put a sub in the trunk. Get a W7 or W3 something along those lines and put it into the trunk with a good amp to drive it.

I had in the past had a 5k amp and huge spl sub, that was to heavy and large to remove for HPDE days.

Agreed. This is the best route in my opinion for that.

You guys are awesome thanks! I think I want to go with this one from JL audio... It's a bit higher than I want to pay but I read some great reviews and it's a one and done solution that already has an amplifier built in. And since the sub is 8 inches it should fit in the trunk pretty easy.

My Setup

Well here's some pics I took of my setup.

Blue and white stripe wire is tagged into 12v triggered wire. Power is easy to snag off the battery. Then R&L signal wires to subs are super easy to splice in right at the amp.

I can hide the amp under this cover in trunk and the box sits just on top. It's a 12" sub ported. Sounds awesome.
