BMW E90 tails from 2008, 2009, 2011+ swappable?

I've noticed that BMW has improved the taillights in later model years from the original 2008 lights, is this true?

I know on the older e46 model, the older tails can be swapped for the LED taillights with relative ease - can this be done for the newer e90 series cars too?

From what I've seen the main difference is the rear taillights from later 2011+ model years - any other major differences?

The E90 got new tails in 2009, you need to swap the trunk too..

thank you guys - really appreciate you taking the time to help me out!

This is exactly the info I was looking for - all the more reason for my to get a 2011+ so I can avoid the trunklid swap and cost involved.

As mentioned earlier, the 09+ E90 M3's have the LCI's as well as the updated CIC iDrive. Your only (cheapish) taillight option on the 08 is to do a blackline swap without having to mess with a new trunk and wiring/coding. Also small things like the clutch spring, cargo net attachment points, and others changed between years. There was a thread recently detailing every minutiae.
