I agree. In our experience once there is audible knock it won't be a simple bearing change anymore. Crank has to come out, at the very minimum. Usually the engine will need to be rebuilt to remove the bearing debris from throughout the engine. Any shortcuts will often end up with problems later and having to do it again.

We have a rebuilt S65 for sale in case you're interested. Sorry to hear about this happening to your car, it's really a shame so many S65s reach their demise in this way.

Yes it's there and thanks! I dropped it off when it was super dirty the color looks a lot better washed that's forsure. Btw if anyone has any questions about the liquid wrap or wants to inquire about getting their car done feel free to PM me and I can explain it! It's definitely a very impressive product.

Thanks! That's actually a different m3, similar purple but it's in a matte finish. He's had his bumpers unwrapped for over 6 months haha not sure why exactly

If it is the RB I don't feel one bit a sympathy for the OP. He spent a bunch of money on mods and cosmetics and rolled the dice on rod bearings.
I bought my car with 85K. I took it to MRF the next day and paid the $2500 to get the bearings replaced. Last edited by Dr. Dre; 07-05-2018 at 09:55 AM.. |

First, I would fix the motor. Selling an M3 with a blown motor makes them close to worthless. You're looking at getting about $10k at the high end? It's not just the cost of the motor but there are other implied things like...not well maintained. That assumption tanks the value of any BMW and more so for an M car.
Rod knock...new crank and rods. Probably worth rebuilding since S65s are still $7k to $9k. Unlike an S54, cheaper to just throw in a used motor. In case you're shopping around, be aware that the crank is surface is heat treated. Once you spin the bearing and wear the surface, you have to re-heat treat the crank or it won't last very long. I haven't priced S65 cranks but I was quoted $1000 to grind and heat treat the crank. At that point, might as well get a new crank. BMW sells undersize bearings but it's to account for wear, not "I didn't spin my bearing that bad". Went through that already.

Just met a couple with an M3 the other day. They never heard of rod bearings. Reason being they don't spend their days on forums reading about M3's, not even a minute. They saw a car they liked and they bought it, nothing more and nothing less.

Normal . That's like 90% of the M3 owners...and they always just dump the car after they heard that strange loud knocking noise coming from under the hood

Update from Malek: he pulled the filter and saw metal shavings but he said it was very minimal and something thats pretty rare. He's sending the filter out to get analyzed and he will have an update Tuesday. The analysis will let us know if the shavings are consistent with bearing failure or bearing wear. He said it's looking pretty good though and there's definitely a chance all I need is new bearings. I'll let everyone know what the update is on Tuesday.
