[Part Identification] Anyone know what this is?

So this was in my thermostat housing... but it's not a thermostat.

So what is it?

I don't get it.

It's a water restrictor? Obviously this isn't the same as the part linked.

Is it an OEM BMW part? Modified one?

buy the car new ? if not this is http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E9...ump_thermostat what i have seen for thermostats in m3. does it have any numbers on it ?

a water restrictor works just like a thermostat just no moving parts.
