The problem is I don't think I could hypermile a whole tank considering the addictive nature of this engine's power and responsiveness. You really don't buy this car for the fuel economy, but it certainly seems you can easily get well over 20 MPG with these cars! I'm kind of pissed off that we have to pay the gas guzzler tax since if it were EPA rated at 23 MPG highway (certainly attainable with the M3) there would be no penalty.
I believe the rating has to be above 22.5 combined mpg (not highway) for a car to be exempt from gas guzzler tax

You are correct about 22.5 mpg but I think it's highway because my STI didn't have the gas guzzler tax and it's rated at 23 highway:

This week with regular driving I'm averaging 18 mpg... Thats several miles of street driving and 70 to 80 miles of round trip commute 5 days a week.... Mixed highway speeds and sitting in traffic.

If I'm on the gas a lot I get around 16 to 17 mpg.

If I try to hyper mile... The best mpg i got on a full tank was 22mpg with this commute... But that was just agonizing

Revival of the dead...

Moved from West Coast where I was getting 17.X mpg consistently, and now supposedly getting 8.X mpg on the East Coast (all city traffic light to traffic light).

Contemplating getting a frikkin Prius.

Ayyyyyy!!! East coast driving here.
I steadily seem to get ~240 miles out of a tank if my car's "miles left to E" estimate is correct.
I like to rev it....a lot, but I'm very very weary of getting anywhere near redline. I THOUGHT (as a terribly inexperienced driver) that RPM of 2,250-3,500 would give me best gas milage, am I terribly wrong? These engines seem to love high RPM.

I might as well sell the top half of my 8.6k RPM range.

Car is getting so little use above 4k rpm its almost embarrassing at this point.

I average around 17 mpg and this is just commuting 50 miles to DTLA and back. Mix of stop and go traffic and no traffic

Display says I average 13.5, but using the fill up gallons divided by odometer method, I really get 12-13 mpg. Most of my driving is commuting stop light to stop light with a few blasts to 6-7k every now and then (not often enough).

I find myself filling up twice a week with city driving....It doesnt help with the stop and go on a manual and I rarely even activate auto/start/stop function that came with the car...Im currently at 13-14mpg...feels like my license plate "1 MPG" lol

I average 12MPG in city stop go commute. Long highway trips can get 19-20MPG.
