What cooling set up for your DCT for tracking?
Curious for those who track their car regularly. I'm torn on which set up to use for DCT cooling.
Larger SLON or Gintani Pan only? Larger SLON or Gintani with a DCT cooler? Or...Stock plastic DCT pan with DCT cooler? There is another thread for DCT leaking but can the track people chime in for what they use for DCT cooling only? Thanks. |

I've got Slon pan and do88 cooler and I've got a misting system that sprays water on the DCT cooler when my supercharger boost goes above a certain psi. I've spoken at length about why I like the Slon pan over the other pan solutions.
I push the car pretty hard---slicks, aero, etc. Things have been running pretty good for me in the transmission department with this setup. |

Slon pan and do88 cooler is the best combo out there at this time.

Slon pan and stock DCT cooler.
I'm not the fastest driver and my car's not hardcore, but I got error codes and limp mode for oil pressure loss. Ran PSS, RE71R, and RS4 thus far. Ran into the error codes with RE71R on a tight track, Thunderhill West. Will be on NT01 + JRZ when my car is done with being overhauled. |

Haha! EAS put that misting kit together. It has helped keep the heat away just that little bit longer so you can try to hammer one more time-attack-style hot lap. It uses the windshield washer reservoir and pump to make it work. I added a power switch on my dash so that if the water runs out, the pump won’t keep trying to spray (Since it’s the windshield washer reservoir, the car will warn you when it’s low). It’s been a very reliable mod. The Hobbs pressure switch went bad once in seven years. You just need to commit to using distilled water so you don’t gunk up the spray nozzles. (Those nozzles jam up surprisingly fast with regular tap water.) I go through just under a gallon per session. So it’s one of those things that I have to tend to before each session.

the difference is the extended pickup neck. there might be slight depth differences, but that is the major difference.

It depends why you are looking at a pan. If you think heat is your issue, then there are several pans out there that allow a large capacity of oil. However, if you are on a track and are suffering mis-shifts due to starvation under high G-Forces, then at the moment, there is only one pan that I know that addresses that—-the Slon Workshop pan. It’s the only pan that comes with a spacer that lowers the suction intake pipe into the deeper pan. Think about it, you could put 20 extra gallons in there with a deeper pan, but if you still just suck from the top, what good is it doing from a starvation standpoint? I show pictures of my install in my build thread on page 33. You can see the spacer installed. (Scroll down the page a bit) https://www.m3post.com/forums/showth...158445&page=33 I’ll leave you with this story. My friend with an E90 M3 race car called me a couple months ago from Auto Club Speedway complaining that his shifting was messed up and that he was worried his tranny or maybe clutches were hosed. He’s gotten faster because the race car build was recently completed. We talked about it for a bit and I said that I had been having similar problems prior to installing the Slon pan. I told him that I thought he was having starvation issues. We talked about the Slon pan, and he went for it. He called me a few weeks ago with the Slon pan on the car, again from Auto Club Speedway......”Duuude! My shifting problems are solved!!!” Several of us have the same story. Again, it depends on why you are pursuing an aftermarket pan. But there’s no doubt that the Slon offering is a quality piece, and it offers a solution that no one else does. EAS put this kit together. They still sell them. Ask them about the particulars. When I upgraded to the OS Giken Superlock, I kept the same diff ratio. Since I have a supercharger, I’m not lacking power or torque, so I didn’t feel the need. I have not done any aftermarket cooling solutions to the diff. I don’t even have a temp gauge down there to monitor the diff. But I don’t do long races. My style of driving is short sessions and time attack-style lapping. I would say if you’re doing 20 min HPDE-style sessions, the diff is generally fine on temps. I have never knowingly had a problem with the car that I could directly attribute to an overheated diff. |
