5w50 in the pacific northwest

I just bought a 2011 E90 M3 with 71k miles. About to do an oil analysis to get a baseline. Car has always been serviced at the dealer, so I assume it was with 10w60. Concerned about the bearing issue and wanting to run a lighter oil in fall and winter. Our temps average 40s to 50s F. I see Castrol and Mobile 1 offer a 5w50, which seams like the best balance. Curious of feedback on running this year round. Thanks in advance.

Not sure if you're driving it in the very cold (20 degrees or lower), but you could consider something like Mobil 1 0w40 for colder temps and then going back to Castrol TWS/BMW 10w60 once it warms back up.

For 40s and 50s I think you'd be fine with 10w60 year round.

BTW: it's Mobil without an E, not Mobile.

Ive been running 5w50 for 3 fills now. Mobil1 for the first and I just put in my second Amsoil fill last week. I'm on the East side of the state so a bit chillier, but I love the performance of the 5w50. Also she doesn't get winter driven on account of the snow so nothing too cold.

You can get the Mobil1 for a steal sometimes as I've outlined in other threads. Napa seems to run a sale on it around the same time Mobil offers a rebate so it works out to a very reasonable per unit cost.

Big fan of 5w50. Have used both Mobil FS and Amsoil for many miles. At 40 degrees, the 5w warms up much quicker and feels better in the process. I will be going back to 10w60 when I get my rod bearings done but until then it’s 5w50.

You guys may also want to consider Motorcraft 5w50. Good specs staying closer to 10w60 hot, but offering really good cold weather performance. They have also gotten the shearing in use issue corrected.
