Noise coming from rear of car

When I'm at a stop and roll forward or backwards, I hear a faint noise coming from the rear of the car that sounds like some one crinkcling an empty bag of chips. Weird comparison I know, but its pretty accurate. Any ideas on what this could be? I jacked the rear end up and turned the wheels by hand but no noise.

check for a loose diff bolt, pretty common for these to back out somehow.

you should try to repeat your test with the car sitting on all four tires and the transmission in neutral. Find a safe spot that is flat and quiet. Place the transmission in neutral, and then push the top of one of the rear tires to easily make the car roll forward and backward and listen for the noise.

It's possible the noise is only present at standard ride height, but when jacked up off the ground the suspension/tire positions change the location of whatever is rubbing or making the noise.

Maybe someone is locked in your trunk and just finished a bag chips?

Sometimes the rear heat shield comes in contact with the drive shaft. Being that it’s super thin aluminum it sounds like a bush or scrapping can noise kinda. Just pull it away from the drive shaft to gain at least 1/2” clearance.

My muffler hanger weld competely deteriorated and separated and was making like brake squeak noise at cold start. This is the center metal hanger that the diffuser also attaches to.

I didn’t know until I recently installed new exhaust. Probably not the exact same issue but might be worthwhile to check it out.

The crunchy/gritty noise. Which I'd assume is the cv axle. Just wondering if I'd need to replace the whole axle or not

Super random, but I just took my car to the shop with a similar experience and they said it was a small piece of debris that was stuck in the parking break boot (or something similar). Noise would exist when driving slowly, go away with speed, and go away once up to temperature. Noise wouldn't return until everything cooled back off.

They said they removed the debris and the noise hasn't returned.

I'll have to check that out when I get back home.

Could be small rock stuck between rotor and dust shield. I had that problem before.

So far, you're correct. I took the brake rotor off, cleaned it really well on the inside since there was a bunch if build up. Sprayed the parking brake down with brake cleaner and a fine wire brush. The noise hasn't come back yet
