Comfort Access driver side door handle stopped working

Hi y’all. Anyone experienced this issue? If so how did you resolved it?

My driver side comfort access door handle stopped working when pressing on the ribbed area to lock and unlock the car. Passenger side and trunk works perfectly so I know it’s not the battery issue since I tried both keys.

I did some research and found out that there’s a sensor in the door handle that can go bad and you have to replace the whole thing. In this case it involves painting it and a whole lots of trouble.

If one can source a used door handle off a junk yard...would you have to code that sensor to your car/keys at the dealership?

In ten plus years of owning my M3 I went through this a couple times. as long as it is just one handle it is the CA sensor in the door handle. An easy fix...

Did you purchased a new door handle or used?

I purchased new. The first it was under warranty and I recall the dealer telling me they came primed so they had it painted. The second time was a year or so ago and I had my indy shop do while the car was in for oil change etc. and they said the handle came painted from BMW.

The same problem occurred in my car. The door handle on the right "comfort passage" stopped working more than a year ago. The right door can be opened with the remote control key. I saw one on eBay, it is 07-13 BMW 328i 335i E92 right passenger side door handle comfort channel gray OEM, $54.99, confirm that the right door handle number is the same as my car. I bought it and tried it. After receiving the goods, I installed them within 10 minutes, and the "comfort channel" on the right resumed normal work. No programming is required.

Thank you guys for the info. I’m going to try Ebay and hopefully can find a used one, instead of paying a dealer $600

Yes, failed to mention no coding required... And my indy shop did not charge me $600 for the handle. Sold the car and gave the new owner all my records but I want to say it was something like $250 installed.

I also had this issue a couple of months back. Purchased a new handle from getbmwparts.com for 290 and installed it myself after watching a couple of youtube videos. My local dealership quoted me $330 for the handle plus 80 to install.
Below is the video that I found really helpful if you are going to attempt to do it yourself.

No coding required, don't fall for anyone and listen to anyone that says coding is required because they are probably trying to rip you off. I asked around multiple sources/shops and got different answers.

I keep checking the door handle to make sure it’s not hot to the touch. I will get it replaced ASAP. Thanks!

Yes, they will ask for the VIN during checkout and it will come painted. I even called them to double check.

Just confirmed with them as well. They source the handle straight from Bmw.


I called the dealer and apparently there’s none available in the us. They checked all 7 warehouses and now have to order the part from Germany. Don’t know if it’s common thing or just shortage of production

Sorry, not looking to hyjack but I'm dealing with comfort access issues on an M3 I recently purchased and I posted a thread on as well. Had an error when I purchased saying defective driver side aerails and replace the handle. As identified here in the thread I ordered from the dealer ($280 as well) and came painted but when installed it's now tossing an "EPROM" error on the new handle and telling me to replace it. Neither door works with CA, but the CA did start the car one time but now nothing working again on CA. I haven't been able to see anything similar on searches. Does any of this sound familiar? I erase the error and it's persistant. Only other odd item of note the FBI module I see has a different VIN in it, could that somehow be contributing to this? Appreciate any insight.

So the cause of my comfort access not functioning was the door handle. Just replaced it with used one and it works perfectly.

It looks like the painted handles are no longer available from BMW, so we are left with primer only. Has anyone had any first hand experience with this lately?

the passenger door handle on my M3 stopped working last summer. There were plenty of used CA handles available on eBay. I paid around $50 for the correct color matching handle. Make sure you get your correct paint code..... Most listings include the code (or ask the seller). I got burned by not doing that since there are 2 black codes! Relatively easy DIY!

If there ever was already painted handles? In my case the dealer had it painted for my car.

I bought two ruby black handles any three months so from my uk dealer.

£225 each.

Came shipped from bmw painted, not painted by the dealer.

If it wasn’t a different frequency, I’d offer to order it for you.
