Hit a piece of tread last night on the way down that gouged the plastic underbelly of my car up forward. Wondering if that's impacting my cooling any because of the massive hole where the front of that tray used to be.

Getting some engine overheating later in the day - going to have to shift more instead of holding gear and RPM when in traffic (aka stuck and drafting behind someone)

Also my DCT cooler seems to be inadequate as well since I run into a lot of hesitation. It got so bad at one point the gearbox was shifting into gears I had asked for seconds before shifting again so it was bouncing around slowly.

More mods. Lol.

Brakes are phenomenal though - even with traffic holding me back I posted a 2:06.95 time - better than my last visit here. Brakes allowed me to confidently brake harder into corners much later than I normally did.

Had a great weekend at Buttonwillow and at Willow Springs. Was great to meet some of you guys for the first time (surewin) and see some of you again (roastbeef).

Seems that I need to have an issue every time I head down to LA! My tires were unbalanced before the trip even begun and I had to rotate the driver side front tire to the rear because it was vibrating the steering column like crazy. Fortunately the tire shop at Buttonwillow was open and I got all tires rebalanced (3 of them needed it, only 1 was good)

Also, I hit some tread on the road on the trip down. I didn't notice anything wrong until Sunday. My engine temperatures were through the roof on Saturday, which I attributed to being stuck in traffic at high RPM. It turns out that the underbelly of my car had been ripped open, basically the front half of part #1 in this diagram was missing:

http://www.getbmwparts.com/parts/201...agramCallOut=3

It didn't impact my driving at all in Buttonwillow other than seemingly punishing me with high engine temperatures. This was pretty crippling, because it advances your max RPM down from 8000+ RPM to about 5-6000 RPM. It wasn't even that hot out, around 83 degrees when it happened. My last trip here, it was much hotter, and it wasn't causing me grief.

At Willow Springs though, it had become completely unhinged at the much higher sustained speeds and was rattling around like crazy. It caused me to be black flagged twice and told my splitter was falling off. Well, my pretend splitter at least, haha.

I tried taping the entire enclosure closed with masking tape, which worked for about 4-5 laps before it got ripped up to shreds:

Cue black flag. Went to the store, and picked up some wider painter's tape thinking it would work better than the 3M automotive masking tape I had with me. Same result - worked for 4-5 laps before got black flagged again. This time I put the car on jack stands and unbolted the entire damn thing off. No more problems.

No engine problems here either, the much higher speeds must have done the trick, and the traffic was great. Got timely point bys at Willow Springs (did not happen with regularity at Buttonwillow).

Best times were:

2:06.55 at Buttonwillow CW13
1:38.62 at Willow Springs

Leaving a lot on the table. After watching Jack Olsen's guide on youtube to Willow Springs, I improved my line through all turns and easily dropped a second from my time there. Thanks Jack!

All that time there corded my driver's side front tire though - I should have rotated them between sessions when I noticed the outer edge was getting eaten up. Was being lazy though and didn't want to jack the car again:

My next mod will be camber plates, heh.

Haha, I saw that too, but most of it was on the car still, just snapped in two. I think that was a tore up cone or large paper bag?

one of these days you'll make it down for a track day without any hiccups... couldn't have asked for better weather, it was a great day.

get the camber plates- you'll love them!

Give Nitto NT01's a try. Your brakes are a huge advantage and you need a sticky tire.

Have another set of RE-71R for this next weekend. Hopefully with the camber changes, they will last longer. If they don't, NT01s are next. I need to find a better place to source them than Amazon!

are you going to the streets of willow on saturday with speeddistrict? i can make saturday, but i don't want to take another day off work for big willow on sunday. i've been itching to try the streets course, even though i don't think i'll like it as much as big willow.

Was a fun track weekend. Came here with a new set of mods: Ground Control camber plates, Macht Schnell Underive pulley, and a fresh set of RE-71R tires. Also had this alignment dialed in before I went:

Hadn't done Streets of Willow before so it was exciting to try a new track configuration. Had a couple scary off-road experiences though on the first day that kind of shook me a bit so I tried to take it a little more conservatively the next day. It also had the side effect of slightly unbalancing my tires :/ These APEX EC-7 rims are champions though. I took some hard hits on these tires and they haven't cracked nor do they have perceptible bends. I need to get a second set so I can have some ready spares.

Also seem to still be chewing through my tires. Going to have to have these remounted on the opposite side (so the driver side inner tire becomes the passenger side outer tire) and vice versa. Tires are directional, so can't rotate them from one side to the other, and Willow Springs is pretty brutal.

Took it easy during the last half of Sunday because I didn't want to drive home on corded tires. I skipped a session to see if I could get my tires rebalanced/remounted but they were too packed to take me.

The interior tread appears to be at the wear bar on the outer side on most of the tires. These tires get really hot, really fast. I had a session on Saturday where I was sliding around all over the place; came back to the paddock and rear pressures were at 44! I immediately bled off some air, but I need to be more diligent about checking tire pressures after each session, especially on these tires.

Arrived in town for Auto Club Speedway on Saturday. Had my tires flipped and rebalanced. Drove down on my Michelins as well, so if I need those I will have them available

Well, after 55 laps at Streets of Willow, 34 laps at WSIR, and 55 laps at ACS Roval, this tire is done, RIP:

The tire on the right is the passenger side front tire, which is completely melted and down to the wear bars. This tire used to be on the driver side front during my Willow Springs adventure, so it has taken the brunt of the abuse.

Did a 1.56.56 lap at Auto Club Speedway:

Lifted to let a GT3 pass me.

Had an earlier incident with a silver GT3 when he almost hit me when I went to pass on the Roval. I was fastest in the group (Black) that day, so when we went to grid order I lined up in the first position. I'm not sure where he came from, but he wanted to get in front but the lady organizing the grid wouldn't let him since he didn't know his lap time.

He went out after I did, and based on how he was driving I was faster despite him having the faster car. He couldn't stand to let a lowly M3 beat him so when I got held up by traffic (caught up to the back end of the run group after a lap), he took the opportunity to blow past me on the right after I got a point by. It was really close, and I was pissed.

He didn't have the balls to go WOT on the oval so I caught up to him. He was so concerned with me in the rear view mirror he blew the left hand turn (so did I FWIW because I was pissed, but my brakes were better):

Best virtual lap was 1:54.65 at ACS. Now if I can just put it all together in one lap, lol.
