Do you need a ton of space? Get a 128i with the 6MT. It is the basic iteration of a modern E36 M3 with regard to size/weight/power. I loved my E36 M3 and think about the day that I can replace my beater car with an E82.
My beater now is the 2005 Mazda6 that will outlive cockroaches though. My wife bought it over ten years ago and at this point I have accepted that we will just keep it forever. |

Yes! I am hoping saying it more will make it happen sooner — even the used ones aren’t cheap. I want one before I am too old to enjoy it.

Surprised no one has brought up the big D
You can go 35d or even 28d, in a 3,5,or X. Still get the mpg's but more torque, more comfort and running costs are decent. You can even sport the wagon!

I just bought a stroker e60 m5 to DD
The SMG makes DD painful in traffic or city slog Do you really need a sports car for your commute? The Prius is a tin can, just get something that's more luxurious with ~300hp

a bit off, but I didn't like the manual for my DD. Had GTI for that, quite a bit better mileage, but ended up giving it to mom. Picked up a M2 as the DD with the DCT, drives like a civic during the commute, fun after the commute. Was going to sell the M3, but am having second thoughts...
not really the M5 discussion, but for a commuter, do you really need all that room, its just you in the car, unless you are a carpooler...

The new M2 with S55 and 400 hp would be a great all-in-one smaller car. I’d tune it to 500 rwhp. But I am not in the new car market and obviously none are used yet.

I'd agree with others that an older m5 is the wrong answer for a commuter. It's the shit at that age that starts to break on you that could make using a car like that a major pain in the ass. Yeah you can get through most of the parts and keep her going, but then you have saved no money and are still dealing with high gas costs.
If I was looking for a commuter, and didn't need a lot of space, Miata , s2000 or gti. They are fun to drive but not powerful. they are cheap to maintain and reliable. Of the bunch the gti is the most practical as it's the most spacious. the s2000 or Miata are fun cause you can mod them as much as you like

So just as people don't get preserving the M3, I don't get driving it everyday. It's got terrible mileage, high maintenance costs, and when new, a steep depreciation curve.
My M3 is 8 years old, and has 28k on it. I store it in winter, and only put about 1,500 miles on it a year. But the quality of those miles is what matters. Track time, back road runs, and car shows with friends are all ways to enjoy the car. Sitting behind grandma's Sentra in traffic on a Tuesday isn't enjoyment at all. Which brings me to my daily: an F30 328. Very good gas mileage. Low maintenance costs (id know, mine has 120k on it), and with the right tires, good handling in all seasons. It's no M3, but I don't feel bad when I'm stuck behind that Sentra, which in NJ, happens often. So, cheers to my daily, and my garage queen.

I've got an E90 M3 slicktop manual as my weekend toy... and use a Tesla Model 3 as my beater car.
Both are beasts in their own ways. But when it comes to commuting 50 miles a day in traffic the TM3 is my go to tool... just get it on the freeway, hit autopilot, sit back and relax. However on the weekends it makes driving my V8M3 so much worth it. |

That being said I’ll check mine for missing shields or clips when I get it up in the air to install a set of MountainPassPerformance/ KW Coilovers. With the Model 3 there’s been many quality control defects however. If you do order one be ready at delivery with a check list of things, mabe a paint meter (to make sure it wasn’t a repainted reject), bright LED paint light so you can reject it before signing the papers... Hell pay your detailer to come with you an inspection fee... lol I spent 45 minutes going over mine before signing the last form... I got lucky with mine and have no defects. Other than that... the drivetrain is solid on these which is something you don’t have to worry about. If not the Model 3 I’d suggest any electric car as a daily driver. - only maintenance is tires + brakes + keeping it clean so you can pay more attention to your M3’s needs - The instant torque in electric cars make them very fun to drive... I use to have a Spark EV as my electric commuter and that thing had 300+ lbs of torque instantly... it was a fun little hatch - althought the range is short for the majority of electric cars... if you plug in every night for your commute you don’t need to worry about range or getting gas... I probably buy gas once a month now for my M3. Heck maybe get a used Chevy Spark EV as the commuter for $5k and use the left over money in the budget to get a 2nd M car like the M5 you mentioned (although I’d rather use the extra money to get a Porsche to pair with your M3). |

I guess it depends on what your commute is like...
If it's bumper to bumper city driving or mostly freeway, then get something comfortable and automatic. But if your commute is back road driving or includes open stretches of road, then an M car would make sense as a DD. My daily commute is 35 mi one way but is mostly open stretches with some interesting turns and minimal traffic, I get to rev out my V8 M3 MT regularly. |

An EV (Chevy Spark and Nissan Leaf) for the daily grind (especially in city traffic) are my weapons of choice. This allows me to enjoy the M3 and 911 on my terms, and I focus on quality miles. I found DD'ing the M3 to be an exercise in frustration, door dings, wasted gas, and excessive worry.

e9x can be a great daily, if you putt around it feels like any other 3 series. However if your commute involves sitting in traffic all day ultimately there are way more cost effective and less frustrating ways to do it.
