software upgrade. question please

I took my x5 for service today and while I was there I asked my service guy that it was any software upgrades available for my M3. I have the 2011 convertible that I took delievery in december 2010. They said that they cant tell me what the upgrade really is but it will be $250. Has anyone done this recently and do you know what it was?

My best guess is maps? Although I'm not sure if 2012 maps are even out yet.

Plus, besides maps, software updates should be free.

I think that either you are asking for the wrong thing or the tech is answering with the wrong thing.

There is a software update for the whole car that may or may not be free depending if it is a warranty work, and there is a map update for the iDrive system that costs around $200 DIY/$up to $300 by the dealer.

Which one are you talking about?

It is not the map upgrade as you can do that on your own.
