M3 top end ticking noise
An unfortunate first post, started my car today after work and immediately noticed this ticking noise. Wasn't there on my way to work in the morning. Some background info:
1. Rod bearings replaced 70km ago with BE bearings and ARP bolts (yes 70km it was done 1 day prior) 2. Tick increases with engine speed 3. Oil level was at 3/4 after I picked my car up from rod bearings, drove it home and it went to 1/2 full so I added 250ml of oil and it went to full after measuring again. 4. Noise is from top left side of engine 5. No engine light 6. Car is a 2008 E93 M3 with 90,700km. Old bearings were worn but not bad at all. Pretty sure it isn't rod knock, my question would be is this lifter tick, exhaust rattle, pulley? Or something else? Wondering if somebody else has had a sound like this before. Will attach a video Please let me know if more info is needed, thanks!!! |

I'd probably tow it back to the service center who did the rodders... might be belt/accessory/tensioner related, but better to be safe than sorry

Good afternoon, Tiffany Here,
I have an E93 M3, The ticking is pretty normal, The M3's S65 ticks are infamous if I'm not mistaken. However some oils may be noisier for the motor than others, since you topped off the oil, what oil did you use? Vehicle usually (and preferably) takes BMW 10-60 oil- and is the quietest option. |

I see, now that I'm listening to it, it's definitely not that default motor tick, it's very quick and high-pitched. Could be lifter, worst case scenario rod knock, I would definitely get it checked out!

It sounds like a rod knock but I’m tying to be optimistic and hope it’s a lifter or AC compressor

Apperently it was a shredded AC belt that was making the noise. Shop has replaced and haven't had any noise for far
