Bought a 09 M3 Sitting for 6 Years
Recently purchased a 2009 E93 M3 6spd that has been sitting for about 6 years. Car currently has 52,000 miles. Did not start it yet. In addition to doing an oil change and draining the gas, anything else I should do before starting it up for the first time?
Already replaced battery. Do I need to remove the spark plugs and spray some oil in the cylinders? Is the easiest method to draining the gas through the fuel pump access under the rear seats? Thanks in advance. |

Why was it sitting for so long? That could answer some questions on what to do next. 6 years is not that long, does the engine rotate freely? Take the plugs out and see if you can turn it over by hand. Check the condition of the plugs, it would hurt to just pick up a new set while you're at it. Boroscope the cylinders if possible? Probably not necessary but if wouldn't hurt. Oil filters, air filters would be a good start too. Tires are probably shoot too from sitting. Could you squirt a little oil down the cylinders minus the plugs and turn it over with power to get done oil back in there? |

The easiest way to drain the gas is probably to disconnect the fuel feed line in the engine bay.
In a perfect world, I'd probably crank it over for a bit with the injectors disconnected and the plugs out. Let it build oil pressure before running it. That said, I've started plenty of engines after similar amounts of time with no prep. As long as it was parked in a relatively climate tempered area, it should be fine.

might be worth it to pull the injectors and have them cleaned/flow tested. There have been a couple S65s taken out recently because of stuck injectors.

Following as my 2008 M3 has been sitting for 6 years. It had been started from time to time but no driving. In process of refreshing everything and getting it back on the road.

UPDATE: Car started right up. Changed the oil. Spun the engine by hand. Did not drain the gas, had less than quarter tank, added new gas on what was already there.
Had some coolant leaks as hoses dried up, replaced those and flushed entire system. Changed all fluids and car has been a blast thus far. Rod bearings done after driving the car for a few miles. Mods to come soon. |

There is a lot of barn find cars, I know some people sitting on one with a blown engine and some that are perfectly fine. If the car hasn't been started for a very long time, I'd put in a fresh battery, drain the existing gas inside the tank and do an oil change.
Make sure when you are doing the oil change, fill some oil in the oil filter housing compartment and soak the oil filter till it is dripping wet. It will help get the oil moving faster and the cold start won't be so "dry". Injectors that have been sitting for a while shouldn't be a problem unless there was a problem to begin with. As always check on all the other fluids in the car also, rear diff, transmission, fresh coolant, and brake oil.

No backstory other than car was just not driven and used. Car was garaged in Long Island as owner never used it. "Never had time."
Car was inspected and started by Motorcepts in NY. Highly recommended, BTW. Gave it a wash, clay bar, and light detail. Cleaned right up. Replaced tires, battery, and maintenance items. |
