S65 Jumped Timing?

So I’ve had my e92 m3 since last March has about 113k miles. Everything was fine until last month I started leaking oil. Took it to a shop that did my valve cover gaskets and they said that now the valve covers had to be resurfaced. Had the job done and now had issues with oil pouring out from the oil cap. With a double gasket on the oil cap seemed to do well enough.

Take my car to work one morning and once I get there my oil level reading shows nothing. Turn the car off and when I’m leaving the office I add a quart of oil so I can get it home. I start the car and get a ticking sound and now the oil level reading is above the max. Half way home my oil level reading shows nothing again so the following weekend I have it towed to a different shop that a friend recommended. As soon as I got the car off the lift the shop owner hears the ticking and says I’ve jumped timing and that I need a new engine. He takes me around back to another e92 m3 with the same exact noise. Fixing the current engine is projected around $11k so that’s why he says you might as well just get a new one. Had never heard of this happening on these cars and I’m not finding any posts with the same issue. Car has no codes and ran fine as far as I could tell the last time I drove it but I was as easy as possible with it just to get it home.

Am I indeed screwed or do I go through the work of taking it elsewhere for yet another opinion before dropping bread on a new engine?

Lol. Jumped timing on a timing chain. That is funny.

Hope the OP gets another opinion as the shop is likely clueless.

Engine doesn't sound great, shop sounds scary OP. I'd leave him immediately and search for a shop preferably with S65 experience.

Yeah take it to someone who knows their way around an S65. The V8 is different enough that a regular BMW mech may now know all the foibles of the S65 motor. That ticking sound reminds of spun bearings. I'd take it to an E9x M3 specialist and get that checked.

I just saw the video, that sounds like a broken valve spring or something else inside the engine is broken. I would suggest stop running that car immediately.

As others said get another opinion ASAP. Only BMW engines I've seen "jump" timing is n20's when their timing chains are so worn that they have a silly amounts of chain slack or of course the S55 spinning the crank hub. S65 highly doubt it. Also if it was truly a timing issue it would run terrible and likely set codes for camshaft to crankshaft correlation and vanos.

At the 32s mark the increased RPM adds knocking noise on top of the ticking. Since the S65 has timing chains, I suspect the ticking is broken valve spring (it's half engine speed or less in frequency) and the knocking sounds like rod bearings. If you're in NYC then you might want to P.M. nycplumber and see what shop(s) he might recommend. Good luck. Let us know how it all ends up. Rod bearings run about $2500 to replaced (parts and labor included) and valve spring might be roughly the same price to replace since the head probably has to come off? Linked below at the 32s mark for the knocking sound. Don't drive it anymore. Get it trailered to your new shop of choice.

" Jumped timing" with no codes.....That funny! This car will throw a code if the back seat passenger farts too hard "P0172" system too rich bank 1. Also, the car would run like crap. Get a good scan tool that can give you live data and find a competent mechanic in your area

So to finally update this thread. Rod bearings were indeed upgraded by the previous owner but still within around 10k miles cylinder 1 spun a bearing and damaged the crank. The filler tubes were filled with metal so the whole top end is likely smoked so it engine is toast. Fat rip.

Damn, sorry to see man. Is it clear what the metal blocking the pick came from?

Really sorry to hear that, OP. Yeah I'm also thinking it was the metal clogging the oil pickups causing oil starvation which caused the #1 bearing to spin.

Main bearing likely failed first, taking out the rod bearing. But everyone is guessing until the crank is removed and a full analysis is done.

Kind of a resolved thread but for everyone’s information timing jumps on Audis are common af!

When I read op’s first post I said to myself that’s a euro mechanic that mostly does older Audi/VW/Porsche lol.

Ive seen a couple first hand at my indie’s garage.
