485 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm and say...
434 lb-ft of torque @ 3,200–5,200 rpm
max 7500 rpm
Ultra low emission vehicle
Aluminum pistons and magnesium oil sump
Pressurized lubrication system
low back-pressure exhaust system
secondary air intake system to rapidly heat catalysts to peak cleaning efficiency
Rigid, lightweight carbon-composite main driveshaft
High-performance 1.5-way mechanical limited-slip rear differential
Dual clutch 6-speed transmission (but that one will be fully sorted out )

Sounds good right ?
Tall order but BMW can do it.
And if they can't well they can still look up here for some help.

It will be excting to see what they come up with, I don´t think we´re going to be disapointed. NA vs. FI, hell, it all depends how you go about it but both have there advantages and distadvantages.

I will take the new Mcoupe but I dont think the article got the weight right. Current 135i UK is 1480 unladen therefore it will put the new Mcouple in 1220kg if it's truely 260kg less, which will approximate to 2700lb with 300+hp. If they can build it I am sold.

I'm really hoping that BMW come up with at least 500+ hp and 400+ torque on their next generation M3 cuz I want them to beat the crap out of the Nissan GT-R. But anyway, let's all not get too excited about this and fully enjoy our first and last unique naturally aspirated V8 powered M3's!!!

I agree. This would make the E92 legendary. I just wish they would have went with the lighter approach on this M3.

Re the GT-R, I wouldn't hold my breath, I can't see them putting out a GT-R type spec for the next M3. It would be too close (assuming similar weight as current generation M3) to the next M5/M6 and that is a no no in BMW.

What will be interesting is if they reduce the weight and by how much. I'd definitely prefer a 420hp, 400lbft car that weighs 1500kg over a 484hp, 434lbft car that weighs 1700kg...

thats it...If BMW makes a V6 then they are dead to me I loved BMW for their amazing engines and without that they are nothing...

If this happens then I will definitely be moving over to Porsche

E46 M3 GTR came in V8 but it was a very limited production run. IMO the E46 M3 will be more of a keeper than the E92 V8. The E46 M3 straight six is without a doubt the best 6 cylinder to ever grace this earth and it was the last NA 6 M3 (probably)

This one will probably still be pretty amazing. Just about everyone doubted the 335i's engine and see what a gem it is? I'll reserve judgement until the first reviews/drives, power figures and weights come out.

BMW haven't disappointed in 6 or 7 years of Engine of the Year awards, be it V8, I6, I6 TT, whatever it was they built it was nothing short of class-leading.

I'm a BMW fan and will continue to be even if they have to change to adapt to hard times.

Loosing weight is definitely the way to go! At last!!!

Now, am I happy that the S65 4lt V8 will be ditched for a 6cyl FI engine? As a current E92 owner yes, very! As a potential future M3 owner I dont know. I don't like turbos and whatever con goes with them (lag & sound mostly), but I guess the M division has been very good in perfecting something which is already perfect! Therefore I wouldn't be surprised if the new 6 cylinder FI engine would make the most out of FI advantages and in the process eliminate the lag. Let's see. Even then, I guess one point I will most likely miss will be the silky, high-pitch sound of the current NA V8...

I just love the current 4lt V8 in all respects! I think it will become an all time classic - I don't know,, but I might as well keep my E92 for life! Now it is the turbo era, tomorrow hybrid/electric motors, well I guess NA seems to be leaving us for good!

even i like my e93 and cannot see viable alternative in same price range for the moment, i think that once the coming 6 inline will be launched our goodold v8's will be disposable pieces of crap.
i bet the new turbo will behave much better in real life but somewhere in my head the m3 is associated with naturally aspirated engines.

Looking closely at the design of the engine in the X5/6M, in particular the turbo configuration, I am more and more convinced that the next M3 will indeed be running with a twin turbo V6 3.2L engine.

This turbo configuration looks to me like something that will eliminate lag, something the 35i engine can not fully, good as it is.

So all you in-line addicts best accept the very real possibility the the M3 will be using a Vee 6 engine for the first.

Look at the configuration and design of the X5/6M turbo setup and read a bit about it and then I reckon you will see where my opinion is coming from. This design is a real breakthrough in turbo application. And may be I'm wrong but it looks to only suit Vee engine applications.
