Labor for engine replacement
I'm trying to get a feeler on labor. Everyone knows my engine had the rod bearing issue which was "half" fixed and it's still going strong, but I want to do it the right way. I'm thinking of purchasing a known working motor and installing BE bearings and bolts myself, then taking it to a shop to have it transplanted. Does anyone have an idea of what I'd be looking at for labor hours for a swap?

Im assuming you dont have the space to do it yourself, I would expect a shop to charge between 12-16hrs of labor to do it. If you had the space to do it all you gotta do is pull the nose off, disconnect the harness from the dme, disconnect fuel/ps/ac compressor, disconnect driveshaft and shifter and trans cooler lines, drop the subframe to clear the pan and then just pull the whole thing out the front and put it down on a tire. disconnect the harness from the engine with the engine out its alot easier. take off the sensor for the oil pan and cps with the engine in the car.

I've been getting quotes for this myself since the piston in cylinder 8 decided to check out for no known reason, missing a chunk... Also rip rod bearing job done 20k miles ago... This car has been screwing me left and right since I got it. I'm over 11k in repairs at this point and the engine is now dead.
Numbers I have been getting for a used motor cost is 6-8k and labor 2-3k but wildly varying total costs. Seeing anywhere from 8k to 16k so far. I wish I had the time and space to do it myself. That would be on the 6-8k level for a used engine. plus maybe 100-300 bucks in tools/fluids. |

Book time for 08-13 M3 engine R&R is 20.6 hours. That's what you'll get quoted by a typical shop. If you get quoted fewer hours then the shop isn't aware or is cutting you a deal.
An engine replacement is so involved however, that you'll need to expect additional needs. Of course, a list of compulsory fluids and seals to complete the job. You'll also need to plan a budget for contingency items you'll come across during the job scope. Hoses, clips, other components that come apart during the replacement. Or "while you're in there" discoveries. |
