Drove an E60 M5 Today...

Considering one as I'd like a larger car than my e90 m3.

The engine was loud, very mechanical sounding. i do prefer the sounds of the m3. there's really not that much more back seat room over the e90 however the trunk is much larger.

Pro
more space
more power
more luxurious feel to the drive, more planted, not as "jumpy" as the m3 (we have horrible roads here)
better engine and intake sounds

Cons
not as agile
smg is horrible (i've owned one before) it doesnt match the luxury character of the car
scared to death of maintanence out of warranty
mpg
new 5 series will be out soon

overall its obviously a great car. i would take it in a second. however i dont think now is a good time with the new one coming out as they will take a major resale hit in the next 18 months.

I've driven a lot of E60 M5 and E63 M6 in SMG. Although its fast it doesn't have that raw feel like the E9x M3. Guess its drivers preference in terms of comfort and luxury. I've also driven them in 6 spd. Now that, I like a lot!!!

I've driven both back to back at the track and I'd say the M5 feels substantially faster once you are going above 40 mph or so. The difference above 100 mph is even more noticeable. Though the M5 weighs quite a bit more for some reason 100 more HP really makes a difference particularly at speed.
Gas milage is different too, on the track M5 was averaging a bit more than 6 mpg and the M3 was doing about 8.5 mpg.

The M5 feels like a rocket from 80mph and up.

With the F10 coming soon I'd pass on the E60, despite my love for that V10.

In driving the m5 compared to my m3, the only difference in power was felt in the M5's ability to continue accelerating well into triple digit speeds. The m5 just keeps overcoming wind resistance.

Gas milage and SMG are poor jokes in that car though.

I drove the e60 M5 many times and still have a fond liking for the car over my e90 m3. I feel the M5 is more raw in engine sound dept and has more character than the m3. I love the multifunction seats.. wish m3 had them. It does feel more planted than the m3 (which likes to dance more).

I hate the SMG (up shifts and jerky nature). This is really where the car is flawed.

SMG is a big joke compared to DCT though... It's almost impossible to downgrade from DCT to M5's SMG... I'm sure they could have put DCT on 2009 M5 models.. it would have been amazing to have V10 engine with DCT

I agree with everyone else in saying the M5 performs amazing at triple digits, it feels like there is no end to its acceleration. Also the exhaust note is amazing, I was at a stop sign and hammered the gas, there was a lady getting her paper off the porch and was startled by the note, I lol'ed as the look on her face was pure terror. That being said around town the car is very jerky, I had it on 400hp and it was still like the first time I drove a manual tranny. Active seats are very cool, and the car I had a test drive with was equipped with H.U.D. which was neat but not needed.

M5 interior over M3 all day. As you said the M3 does feel a lot more balanced, though the M5 is a beast under hard acceleration...In my opinion after driving both, the M5 is better for every day (minus the gas milage) It would be so much better if it had DCT!

Does anyone know why you need to press a P500 to get all the HP? Is it for longer engine life? fuel economy?

Anyway, I hate the idea of having to press a button whenever I randomly want to go from cruising to full instant power.

Well said-

From 0-100, the m5 and m3 are even- Not many M5s getting low 12s/high 11s with simple bolt ons!

also,

No one is allowed to comment on how many MPG you get on a $95,000 dollar FIVE HUNDRED HORSEPOWER CAR! Good gas mileage = a slow car.... If you dont like 10mpg and SMG3 then go buy a 550i automatic

Example: No, I dont want a Veyron- a full tank of gas only lasts 13 minutes at WOT.....

the m3 sedan is like a smaller, sleeker, more agile M5-

m5 feels heavier so not as raw as m3. They have higher torque figues so inside the car you might feel as if its stronger, but the weight makes it slower than the m3

^You don't say (peek at the mods in his sig)

Honestly, I'd keep for the e90M based on the warranty issue alone. Paying out of pocket for basic maintenance is something I've really gotten used to with this car. Though you could re-up the warranty on an e60M.

If we're talking about track times, M3>M5.

If we're talking straight line speed, M5>M3 stock vs stock; modded M5>modded M3.
Modded vs stock, stupid comparison and not really fair now is it...
