Let's play "estimate the damage"

Sadly, my 3 day old M3 (to me) took one on the chin this morning when a 1997 Camry ran a red light on a turn and clipped my front end. Good news is that no-one was hurt and that it was a very low speed accident.

See images. Windshield washer fluid was leaking as well so the tank - which must be directly behind the fascia - apparently cracked. So, to repaint the fascia and replace the windshield wiper tank, what do you guys think? $1000? More? I'm gonna (hopefully) get her insurance to pay for it.

Did you get an accident report? If so it will be very easy to get her insurance to pay for it. I'm going to say 1600.

I think it's hard to imaging that the front facia took such a beating without moving the fender or hood slightly. I hope for your sake that everything is cool. If I had to guess, and it's purly a stab in the dark...$2600.

Good point about the accident report. No police on the scene as it's highly doubtful they'd show up for a low speed accident where there are no injuries and the damage is cosmetic. Oregon does require you to file an accident report if the damage is over $1500 so I need to get on that.

Thanks for the reply!

By the looks of the damage, it looks only cosmetic and you shouldn't have to replace the bumper. If the bumper cracked then you'd probably want to replace it, otherwise they'll just sand down the paint and respray. If I were you, I would inspect the bumper myself and see if there are any cracks. If there aren't any, don't let the body shop you go to convince you it needs to be replaced if you don't find anything structurally wrong with it. If there are dents, then can be removed easily. As for the windshield fluid container, they're relatively cheap.

Total bumper respray: approx. $450, shouldn't need to pay much more.
Windshield container: $48

There might be other parts broken behind the bumper, like the bottom heat shield or foam barriers.

Thanks very much for the detailed breakdown. So we have $500 on the low side and $2500 on the high side!

Collision was more of a lateral swipe than a t-bone and I didn't see any crack in the fascia. Alignment with the front quarter panel is a smidge off but that could be a bent mounting bracket. I'll post an update once the insurance estimator has a gander at it.

Glad I can help. Look at it this way: you can pay more than $500 or much more than $500 if a body shop tries taking advantage of you. You'll pay around $500 at a shop that doesn't have jacked prices.

Yes. She admitted fault, was apologetic at the scene, called me and apologized again, and even set the claim up with her insurance company before I got into work. Of all the people to have an accident with, she was unbelievably stand-up.

Anybody have any body shop recommendations in the Portland area? I'm thinking of German Formula in NE Portland for now.

You're in PDX?

Go see Rich Smith at Active Autobody or the people (Daniel is my guy) at Autowerks NW on Macadam. They do all our work here at Rasmussen.

I wouldn't let anyone else in PDX work on my BMW. My previous position here at Rasmussen was coordinating body and paint repairs - call me if you have any questions.

Thanks Tyson. Active Autobody is a long walk to my house in NW so they might get the call on this one for convenience factor.

Also, OT, but I damn near almost bought the Space Grey w/Fox Red coupe you guys had for sale (used) about 2-3 weeks ago but I was waffling on a red interior and it sold by the time I made up my mind. I will probably be taking my M3 to Rasmussen for service in the future so I might run into you at some point.

Odds are that the retainer clips for the headlight is broken - this is going to be a few grand to fix minimum.

If you use a BMW Certified Collision Repair, then I expect it would be around $2500.

Otherwise, $1000 should definitely cover it.

Update: ^^^ WINNER ^^^

Estimator was pretty thorough and felt a slight imperfection in the front fascia so they're getting me a new one. So new front fascia, plus repaint, plus washer fluid hose came out to $1400.

Going to go with Active Autobody in NW for repairs.

Can you get a replacement euro bumper? It looks pretty cool IMO since it doesn't have the reflectors or painted reflector caps which, again, IMO look just as bad as the amber ones
