Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement
A guy is quoting me 7 hours of labor to replace ( one wheel) my rear passenger side wheel bearing and hub. It comes out to around $950. Is this the general correct ballpark? Or is he trying to rip me off?
Thanks

7 hours is high, you can do them in less time if you've done them before but they're a bear of a job for most and nearly impossible without the specific special tools for the job. Price is not out of line depending on shop or location.

Sounds like they don't have the correct tools and plan to remove the entire spindle assembly, and press out the bearing and hub on a floor press. I believe the book time per bearing is 3 hours.

What are the symptoms of failing wheel bearings? What mileage? My car is at 120k kms and haven't changed wheel bearings yet. Curious around what mileage they start to go.

mileage isn't that great of an indicator for failures. It's generally when you start hearing humming, growls, or for me, all of the above + minor clicking when shaking the wheel 12-6 position

7 hours is insane. I watched my buddy take it off in 20 minutes lol. Even if it took an hour to beat the old bearing out ( you're replacing the hub too) that's 3 hours max.
Fyi: I thought I had a bad wheel bearing after changing the sensor and it turned out to be a bunch of caked up road debris. When we hooked the scanner up to the car it wasn't showing the same constant values but after taking it apart there wasn't any issue with the bearing( that's how you diagnose It) It took less than an hour to drive my car with my tech friend, put it on a lift and take the hub off to analyze, put back together and road test it. Albeit everything went smooth but 7 hours is offensive. The bearing is $50 and the spindle is a little over $100 |
