Dinan exhaust question

The M3 that I bought came with a bunch of Dinan parts on it:
  • Throttle bodies
  • Under-drive pulley
  • Air filter thinger
  • Strut braces
  • Tune (8,600 redline)
  • Exhaust
  • 4.10 LSD

The Dinan exhaust sounds nice, bit strange that only 2 tail pipes are open.

Question is: if I choose to remove the primary cats with test pipes, how will the Dinan tune react? Will it have CEL issues or does the Dinan tune come prepared for cat delete?

Please let me know if you have any info.

Thanks!!

you will likely have a check engine light. car will pickup a little power, but tune essentially stays the same if that makes sense. it isn't adaptive, like it senses the cats gone if thats what you're asking.

The white paper on the design of the exhaust explains it all. I'll attach a copy to this post since it appears now that Dinan is not Dinan anymore, the white papers aren't easily found on the web site.

Makes sense that it is not adaptive. As for the CEL, what can be done to get rid of that if I install test pipes? Would it help to use spacers to remove the rear O2 sensors from the flow path?

Thanks for the help.

You can try to add the stage 2 Dinan tune. Dealer should only charge you the up charge......couple hundred dollars. This tune is the one used when running the Dinan mid-pipe which is catless........Phil

I cannot find the catless mid-pipe on Dinan site. And I think Dinan is really not Dinan now... What the heck happened there?

Thanks for the suggestions,

This is Steve Dinan's new business: https://carbahnautoworks.com

Under the High Performance section there are Dinan products available that are no longer sold on the old Dinan site such as stroker engines, the 4.2L rebuild engine, etc. Perhaps contact them for help.

That was a racing part that was discontinued. The tune for the off road pipe that WAS sold is still available. Check with your local Dinan dealer.

Hmm, revisiting this.

After some more reading, I really do not want to have too much of a gas smell. So, I was wondering what people would recommend for X-Pipes with high flow cats.

I know I will need a new tune and I am leaning towards and Alex tune. I may go with tat tune regardless of X-Pipe swap as it sounds like a pretty sweet tune.

Cheers,

Dinan plus test pipes sounds amazing. IMO save some $ and get test pipes in lieu of an aftermarket xpipe. You'll be happy.

Will the secondary cats keep the smell to a livable level?

Yes. I have this setup and honestly can't smell a thing. My wife and 4 year old have never complained.

Groovy. But you have to chop you stock exhaust...

I guess it is not too hard to find a stock x-pipe if I want to revert.

Thanks for the info.

Dinan has tune with or without cats.
There is no chopping? Just unbolting and rebolting...
No smell
Two exhaust ports work, it’s designed for power, unlike the MPE, but like the E46

The Dinan setup is quite well designed and the envy of most ‘tuners’.

I have it, pm me if you have questions...

I have the rear Dinan section now. It is a really quick bolt on.

I am wondering about what I should do with the x-pipe. I think I am leaning towards the test-pipe (primary cat delete). But to do that, you need to cut the x-pipe. You can re-weld the cats back on if needed though. That, or I can buy a factory x-pipe pretty cheap it seems.

As for the tune, I am the second owner of this car. I am not sure how hard it would be to get the stage 2 Dinan tune. I have also read that Dinan tunes are pretty conservative. Not sure it the stage 2 Dinan tune is also conservative.

Cheers,

After reading about this, I am really leaning towards test pipes in the future.

For those who have these test pipes, is there a better type i.e. sleeve with z-cut (Active Auto Werke) or the wider clamps (Turner, Macht Schnell)?

I also assume that regardless, exhaust gasket RTV should be used on the clamped connection.

Thanks,

Lol, I am think.

Yes, I have been thinking about their tune as well. I think with a good tune and test pipes, the car will be even more fun than it already is!!

We will see what the future brings. Once I get it sorted, I will report back.

Cheers,

Thanks,
I hate slip fit connections, so after fiddling with it for a bit and still having leaks (no RTV) I just had an exhaust shop weld it (they didn't even need to remove anything.
