Navigation map sucks.
i have a 2011 m3. i don't use the turn by turn navigation, but i like to look at a map sometimes. has anyone updated their maps and enjoyed it?
my major complaint is the lack of detail, and i'm specifically refering to the street names. i snapped this pic this morning and it isn't too zoomed out. a few unimportant street names come up, but none of the major streets, which irritates me.

I'm more upset with the inaccuracy of the traffic info. It is worthless. Freeway shows clear, but it ends up a parking lot. Vice versa.
I only use google maps to check traffic now. Pity. It was a good idea BMW. |

If you didn't zoom in and all streets were named, the screen would be black with lettering.

I want to know what the stupid grey traffic map does? Why is this so hard BMW? Make a fucking navigation that doesn't take me the wrong way, shows me SHIT and actually has proper traffic!

they could easily name all the streets that form the blocks, or "squares" you see on the screen. its stupid to me that two unimportant streets are named, but none of the major streets.

Back to the grey map. What is it? Mine shows red arrows for traffic in normal day or night mode maps. But in the grey traffic map, I dont see shit but grey map!
WTF. Help me understand this junk while roastbeef is bitching (and rightfully so I might add).

When I put mine in grey mode/traffic, I can see the traffic as different colors on it.

Do you have that 200 dollar bmw assist package? My normal maps shows red triangles in a row to display slow traffic. Ive never see a single icon on my grey maps. Most interesting!!!

When I have grey mode enabled, traffic will come up as a yellow line when it's slightly congested. Kind of like how Google Maps does. I'm usually never in an area where it's heavily congested to see if it will turn red. And to be honest, I don't know how they are getting the actual traffic data on there anyways unless it is through the actual BMW Assist. I should hit a little traffic tonight going to dinner. I'll snap a pic of what it looks like on my iDrive.

i don't have bmw assist or apps, and i still get traffic info. it isn't terribly accurate. you're better off predicting traffic for the time of day.

Or they should upgrade like Audi and use GOOGLE MAPS smh...stuck in the past with ineffective methods. Makes you wonder if the designers even use it themselves.

The E9x has antiquated technology, no doubt. It's a hardware limitation, not software. The Fx vehicles with advanced real time traffic information (ARTTI) are much more accurate as they use a different method to note traffic conditions. I suppose upgrading to a HU-H may remedy this issue for those of us with "old" cars.

There are multiple iterations of the RTTI, depends on MY. Most of them use some sort of local broadcast data (usually from radio) to figure out traffic. My 2009 seems to do a pretty good job of yellow/orange/red in the grey traffic mode (I don't use the standard one because those arrows aren't intuitive and it's easier to read the grey one)
I agree they could format it better to display road names, but that's why you have turn-by-turn anyways.... |

I have a 2016 Z4 28i and it is even worse. Has anyone provided useful information on what to do about this or is it a lost cause?

I only have BMW navigation in the X5 and it's the 2012 version like the LCI M3s
I use it in split screen On the left screen I have the perspective nav set to 400ft. On the right hand map I usually have a north-facing-up auto-zoom map which shows my entire journey. Sometimes I set a top-down map zoomed in so I can easily see street names, etc |

I agree with Beef on this, I use it when we are hitting curvy country roads and I want to see how the road is layed out. But for actual Navigation use, I'll stick to my IPhone XI that I just picked up from a friend at Apple who works on new phone testing with the public before the phones go out.
