Post 1-year running costs on an AMG GT S

Hi all,

Thought I'd share this with you for a chuckle...

I tallied up my 1-year maintenance costs for my 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S, the car I replaced my E90 M3 with. The total was ~$5k. I don't find this too surprising considering that A) it's German and B) the MSRP was $144k. I also had some inherited problems from the prior owners to fix. (Here is the full story on my first year with the GT S.)

Compared to my E90 BMW M3, the AMG is down right reliable with zero CELs. I'm actually starting to wonder if the AMG will have enough broken parts to make its extended warranty a win. With my M3 the warranty paid out many times its cost!

Best,
Mike

So far our W212 E63's extended warranty has paid out $0 since it went into effect a year and a half ago.

That's great! I think you are still winning if your car is reliable.

Murphy's law I guess!

I just waxed it so I suppose it's going to get rear ended tomorrow

I love the GT every time I see one out in public, particularly the roadsters. Great design that's really holding up well. And then I see a GT sedan and wonder how tf it's from the same company

I don't know what your ownership timeline is like but most relatively new cars do not have any issues.

The true test is when you've had the car 10+ years as some of us have with our M3s. Then the true "cost of ownership" shows up. I had a 7 year BMW extended warranty on my M3 and it's never paid out a cent. Nor has it had any non maintenance issues since purchasing to now.

Please let me know when you put your M3 up for sale... My extended warranty on my E90 M3 started paying out as soon as the OEM warranty lapsed and paid out $25k in repairs. :P

I assume you needed a new engine?

I already had the engine rod bearings replaced with BE bearings. It's a small $2000 maintenance cost for a a lifetime of worry free operation. Throttle actuators were replaced under the CA emissions warranty, not out of my extended warranty. The engine really needs nothing else.

I also had all the suspension and bushings replaced as preventative maintenance to maintain the handling of the car. Custom full clear bra as well to prevent rock chips, regular detailing and coatings. Leather is cleaned and conditioned regularly. The car still looks and runs in showroom condition still.

I did an extended test drive of the AMG GT-S at Monterey Car Week. Seems like a great car in the few hours I had it. With the hot V turbo design, I don't know long term reliability. A NA V8 is just much more simple and easy to maintain.

And of course, manual transmission is a must!
