NJ people!!!Need help!!! got pulled over in NY yesterday
Hi guys,
this is what happened. I was on my way to DC, coming back from NY. I was doing 122 mph over the usual 65, and guess what, i got pulled over. Now im in trouble.I have a court date june the 9th and it SUCKS. I m gonna have to drive all the way there just for that court thing. If you re from NJ, could you please tell me if you had a similar experience there?? Whats the worse that can happen to you? How are the rules in NJ, very strict? I am from VA and cops dont joke here. Also do you know a good lawyer for this type of matters. I have to get one from there. Thank you so much for your precious help, Take care |

Lucky you didn't go to jail. In a lot of states, 20-30 MPH over the speed limit will get you a reckless driving ticket and some cops can take you to jail for it...guess they often wouldn't want to mess with the hassle.
I'm sure the judge will some some harsh words for you driving that much over the limit. Good luck. |

If your state has a point system, you'll be getting wreckless driving points, and maybe some more. You will 100% lose your driving privileges in the state of NJ(if that's where you were pulled over). It will be for months or years(no joke). So, next road trip, drive around the state of NJ. Trust me, I know this system.

You better lawyer up for this one. Could be really bad, especially these days.
NJ is a tough state. They could throw community service at you, jail time, etc. Points and a fine are the least of your concerns. The only way to know for sure, as far as what you face, is if you find a NJ lawyer who handles these types of issues. Good luck. |

Are you saying you were going 187 mph? How did he clock you or catch up to you. I am very surprised he didn't throw you in the pokey.
I got pulled over on the Jersey turnpike going from DC to Boston years ago. He wrote me up for going the speed limit in the rain. It was like a ten dollar ticket but a waste of both our time. My dog almost took his hand off when he reached in the car. Good luck and let us know what happens. Get a good lawyer.

57 MPH over!!! You in deep do-do in any jurisdiction...sounds like a lawyer is a must. As mentioned, you're lucky you didn't get hauled off to jail. Pretty irresponsible.
EDIT - I misread the OP, he was 122 mph OVER 65..??? Should be in jail then....

i live in NJ and a couple years ago i got tagged at 108 in a 65. (highway, sunday morning, not a car on the road except me) Lesson learned.
I paid about $600 in fines and had to do 50hrs of community service. Great learning experience, i actually enjoyed the community service. I say enjoy the 0-80 feel, leave the 100+ stuff to the track. You were further over than me and the judge spared my license, but you are looking at 1 month loss of license either in NJ or total. I dunno how it works. oh and court costs.

He's looking for advice and asked if anyone knows a NJ lawyer and no one is helping him but criticizing his ass instead. The deed is done.
122 over limit is off the hook though hah.

I can't believe I am even responding to this. Driving the streets at 187 mph is beyond insane it is deadly. I am having a hard time believing this...Are you sure you meant to say 122 mph over the speed limit?
First off, there is no way you would still have your car and you personally out of jail if you we going 187 mph and were caught by the state police. Secondly, I doubt your car will actually go that fast. However, in a previous posting by "South" calculated the top speed of the M3 given the gear and wheel size limitations. Quoted from South...For the 18" wheels the average circumference is 2.02m, that makes a gear limited top speed of 188.6 mph (19": 187,7, 2.01m circumference). I hope you made a mistake in your facts for sake of those around you when you drive like this. I assume you tuned your electronic limiter beyond the factory setting of 155 mph. Yes get a lawyer and then get a doctor. |

General rule of thumb is fight it - often procedural technicalities or the ticketing officer not showing up can get you off. The chances may be slim for this type of excessive speeding though.
Lawyer up and try to find a hole to wiggle through - this could be the best money you spend for a while. And no, he was not going 187 mph - Good luck OP - |

Get a lawyer.
Buy radar detectors and laser jammers. Don't drive like an idiot, lesson learned.

You're lucky you weren't hauled to jail on the spot. You may not be so lucky when you're standing tall before The Man. You should definitely have a lawyer with you for the court appearance. In fact, a lawyer may be able to work with the court to eliminate the requirement to appear and/or have the offense reduced. You should try to get a lawyer that routinely works in the specific court where you're required to appear because he/she may have some influence with the prosecutors in that jurisdiction. Even if you have to pay $1,000 or more, it will be worth it in the long run. If you don't take this seriously, you'll regret it when you're crying for mommy from your cell at Rikers Island! Do it now. Don't wait until the last minute. Good luck!

That being said, this is unfortunate and of course still over the top. If you don't have any contacts in NJ I would take a look at a site called Lawyers.com. It list advice on how to handle speeding tickets and a search for lawyers. You might want to find out your options as well. In Canada and some states you can meet with the justice of the peace prior to a court case and plead down the offence. Where this is done, they will often give you advice on how to handle this. |
