So where are you going with this now? By the way, I asked you a few questions to which you did not answer any.

I want to know how many of you complained to the dealer your engine makes this noise, hoping they find something wrong? Then to be told there is nothing wrong, but you insist their is.

It seems to be pretty subtle noise, so I could easily see a dealer saying it's nothing.

When u come in on a flatbed because of limp mode or just cause, that tells them you're serious. That's what I meant by it. But I doubt ur car gonna have issues that early.
Not every thing that can go wrong has a sensor to tell the car it's going wrong. Something like a bad bearing could grenade the motor before the sensors know what happened.

Here we go again. The ticking noise has increased in frequency and bmw dealership claims that sound is exhaust expanding. Just changed the oil as I do every 5k miles and the car started acting funny immediately after. Ticking noise is very prevalent in the 1k to 3k range, car started shaking and making a whirring noise. This is completely unacceptable for a car that has 20k miles. Three out of the four Bmws that we have owned in the last five years would qualify as lemons. I'm so tired of being told at the dealerships to not listen to other forum members as they are a bunch of doomsayers.

That's some pretty bad luck...

Yeah I know. What really bums me out is that I intended on keeping the M3 as I love everything about the car, except the gas mileage of course. The most ironic thing is that all three of the Bmw's that were built in Germany were the ones plagued by constant problems, Yet the X3 built in South Carolina was flawless the whole time it was with us.

I cant wait to SC this bad boy and have it blow its engine in two or three or never years , and then lose three months of sleep afterwards wondering if it was the build quality, the SC or Jesus !!!!
You only live once . It's a pile of nuts and bolts like a plane or a lawnmower, both of witch will fail eventually.

I had a blown motor on my 2010 at about 23000 miles. I purchased that M3 used as a lease assumption from an owner here. bmw replaced the motor, but i did not want to deal with that car, nor was I comfortable with it after that. I traded it in for a 2012 comp package. i did get the ticking sound after the 1200 mile service (probably still there), but now my exhaust is too loud to hear it

I changed the spark plus yesterday at 37k km and went for a drive and listen to any foreign sound/noise just to be on the safe side. At home, with the engine running/idle opened the hood to see if there were any leaks. I heard the ticking noise very loud and clear. They were coming from each of the cylinder head areas where I had just replaced the spark plugs. I don't know whether the ticking has been there for a while. But now it is very noticeable. May take the car to the dealership during the week and get them to lodge a PUMA case just to put my mind at rest. Hopefully nothing dramatic and expensive. The car is five years old.

Take a video or sound clip and send it to me. It's probably normal. All of the M cars have noticeable valvetrain noise.

That's what I initially thought. Just a precaution. I will send you a short clip. Thank you Mike

Loose spark plugs can also emit a tick sound. Maybe re-torque them as well as post a vid.

Did they mention what the problem was with the first car with the blown motor? Was it bearing related?

All the plugs were over torqued. BMW say 23 nm but they were definitely more than that. Hopefully it's the valvetrain like Mike Benvo said. Fingers cross.

If you take a video, can you post it on this forums as opposed to mailing it to someone, so we all can see?

Managed to upload a video finally. The ticking noise is not as noticeable as soon after the plug change. Please comment.
