Hey downtowncb,
If you plan to do a DIY I would be more than happy to help. Let me know.
Where in Seattle are you?

Hey, thanks for the offer! Sorry I just saw this post. I live in Mountlake Terrace.

The new actuator showed up yesterday, I took off work early to get the M running. I've been driving a friends 4 cylinder Toyota Tacoma for the last week and a half. I was very motivated to get my M back...

After bank 1 throwing random fault codes over the last six months, the car threw out codes for both banks. I cleared the codes and drove, and the haven't resurfaced yet. Don't know how long before they complete die on me. I have a set waiting to be installed. Had the car since new, and to date have done 52k km.

My car keeps going into limp mode almost every time I drive it. My car is going to the dealership today for an alignment so I will see if they are willing to replace it/them under the 7yr/70k mile emissions warranty. I just hit 48k miles this morning.

0027A1 - Electronic Throttle Control: check start
002B57 - check at lower top

Those are the 2 codes I am getting with the BMWhat iphone app

2B57 is a motor emergency program which will trigger when the actuator is faulty. A new actuator will fix your issues. They should cover it without issues, good luck!

Actuators for this engine are just shitty. They're in a shitty [hot] location, a shitty servicing location, and just shitty fisher price plastic built. BMW should be ashamed for making these a maintenance item.

Thanks Mike. I showed them the codes and they said that's exactly what another m3 is in for and they just ordered one for it. Unfortunately, I cleared the codes by accident and it hasn't come up since. I was more than willing to just be provided the part(s) and follow this DIY but they were adamant on covering the labor as well. So I play the waiting game...

Swapped out bank 2 this evening. About a 3.5 hour job. Barely squeezed bank 2 out from under the wiring harness, I imagine bank 1 will be a challenge when it goes. Thanks for the great write up. Only issue i had was the 10mm bolt on top of the plenum broke off as i was tightening it. Sore back and hands, happy wallet.

Well... i thought it worked. I am still getting a bank 2 fault code after supposedly replacing bank 2. Please tell me bank 2 is the actuator closest to the drivers side and bank 1 is nearer the passenger side like the diagram on the first page of the thread.

Yep, that should be right. Maybe try clearing the codes and see if it comes back? That's really odd.

Tried using Torque to clear any codes this morning. Fault still comes up intermittently. After sitting cold for several hours. Cranks up no codes. But if i drive for a few minutes, stop and crank again codes pop up.

Did you replace with a new or used part?

I know it's a lot of work and you probably don't want to hear it, but I'd swap the 2 TVA's between Bank 1 and 2 and see if the codes follow the parts. Unless someone else has a better idea?

Will any "code reader" be able to clear the codes (autozone, bmwhat, etc)?

My 2011 E90 M3 is posting these codes:

0. Motor Control:
<--------------------------->
Engine / Motor:
- Fault: check at lower top
- Code: 002B57
- Fault: Control igniter 6
- Code: 002756
- Fault: check at lower top
- Code: 002796

Could this be indicating a Throttle Actuator issue? I got the Engine Malfunction alert after changing spark plugs and read these codes.

Benvo, you mentioned the code:002B57 earlier, are you familiar with the others?

Thank you!

Thought I'd add in my experience.

2012 DCT with 62k. Same "limp mode" problems most other guys talk about. Checked the codes using my bluetooth OBDII code reader and the "Torque" app for Android. Came up as Bank A throttle actuator and a few other random codes involving traction control and dynamic stability control.

Took car to dealership and explained everything to them. They called a few hours later and said it would be about $1700 to install the new actuator. I called back and reiterated that I thought this repair should be covered under the "Federal Emissions" warranty. The service advisor checked into it and said that while the repair and part where not covered under that warranty, BMW was offering a "Goodwill cost adjustment" on the repair. It will end up costing me roughly $75 total......

Thank God for M3Post!!!! I'd have never thought to bring up the warranty and coverage stuff to the dealership unless I had researched the problem on this site. Thanks to you guys for spending the time to share your knowledge and experience with the rest of us!!!!!!!

$75 > $1700

Happy Day!

No doubt! I feel very lucky. I wish they would replace the other actuator as well, but I am not going to push my luck.

If the other one goes, we'll see what happens......

Thanks again guys!
