I still like BBS. But if you are after a "custom" finish such as xfirer1guyx's wheels HRE is the way to go. |

I just don't understand how it happened. But it's all good. You and Andy treated me pretty good when I bought them so it's cool. Thanks!

Thank you for all the insight! Definitely helping out.
One thing I wasn't even thinking about was how it makes it so hard to see the detail on the gloss black color. In looking at more wheels now, I'm thinking the S101 may be better as they offer the contrast on the rim. I've gone with the Gloss Black theme throughout so far - My front grills, IND side, and Jet black glossed the inside of the Headlights ---- so the theme I was going for was more aggressive. I'm liking the gun metal look too - but always had a thing for black rims. Yes, the BBS are about 500 more than the HRE - but after 8k on wheels, it basically comes out to about the same. This is an example of the same color I have (San Marino Blue) on an M6, with the HRE S101...Looks pretty money to me (and by money I mean broke as $hit will be me after EDU09 has convinced me to mod the crap out of my car). |

The FI takes it for me, though I'd be happy to run either if my pockets were deep enough, haha. It's been said already, but I wish the FI's came in better offsets all around - even the 18" variant leaves a bit to be desired IMO (save for maybe the RKP version).

Very insightful thread. Thanks for all the info guys. When its time to change my wheels, I think MORR is better for me

You should change that analogy. Rolex movements are sub-par for the money, there are far better movements/watches available that are more accurate. Rolex's are for old people and Rappers attempting to impress...which I don't believe you were attempting to convey.

For me the list is-
1) BBS 2) Volk 3) HRE BBS and Volk wheels are a true forged wheel in the sense that BBS and Volk own and operate the highest strength forging machines in the world. The wheels are actually stamped into the the design of the wheel. The difference between forging the wheel into the shape of the wheel and cutting the wheel out of a forged blank, as I understand it, is the way the grains are arranged within the wheel itself. With a forged blank your forced to deal with the grain flow in the shape of the blank and that grain flow integrity will be severed when the blank is milled. With a true forged wheel the grain flow maintains integrity within the actual design of the wheel. The advantages of milling a forged wheel out of a forged blank is being able to produce wheels in many different sizes and offsets to please customers. In the true forging process the cost of allowing custom offsets and sizing would be cost prohibitive due to the number of stamps (very large and heavy pieces of high quality steel made to withstand the force of the forging presses) that would have to be produced to accommodate customers. BBS will do custom orders but I believe they require a 20 wheel set run. You cannot go wrong going with any of the three I have mentioned. But, to call a milled forged wheel as high quality as a true forged wheel would be a mistake.

Is there even a comparison? Quality and materials aside, no one can back-mill like BBS. Look at the BBS FI's organic milling vs. the copies/competitors. I say copies is because all others followed BBS in the method spokes were milled for weight reduction and aesthetics. Lesser players (read: boutique wheel companies) such as HRE, ADV, etc. wishes they had the capability to finish wheels like this.
To compare the others to BBS/Rays is asinine. HRE P101: BBS FI: Notice how the BBS' look like they were carved out, giving a very organic appearance as opposed to the CNC machined look of the HREs. That's where big money finishing and forging comes into play. BBS is a boss amongst bosses my lads. Last edited by Halitosis; 12-29-2014 at 07:21 PM.. |
