ISSUE: Rought idle *throw no code

- I had EAS run the test on both throttle actuators and they are in good shape.
- changed spark plugs @ 92xxx miles
- no tune

what else could it be?
1) coil packs?
2) MAP Sensor?

a couple of friends that are local have had some rough idle issues, the tech that fixed both are stating icv. an error on the icv can actually throw codes related to actuators.

ICV = throttle actuator ? correct me if I am wrong.

If so, i had EAS run both Bank 1 and Bank 2, the result both are in good shape.

only code they catch was 279E which is oil condition sensor.. but after they clear it, the code (279E) is gone.

Sounds like an idle control valve issue. They are under warranty here in a California until 100k miles I believe.

thanks guys...

1) ICV (I will look into it)
2) New Century BMW told me to change out the ignition coil , they said, a lot of time, the computer wont able to catch the symptom on ignition coil.

describe "rough idle"

does it happen after you fill up? does it happen when you hit the brakes? ICVs often throw codes and people are usually quick to blame an ICV but theres a bunch of posts where it was not the ICV itv was actually the fuel vapor purge valve which will never throw a code, rough idle even stalls

1) Nope, it does not happen after I fill up
2) Nope, it does not happen when I press the brake
3) Only happen when the car is warm up.
FYI, the rough idle doesn't happen all the time.

Again, I had EAS run both actuators and they are in good shape (so i dont think is the actuators)
got me look into the MAP Sensor and the coil packs, I had the spark plugs change about 5 to 6 month ago but didnt change the coil.

this car does not have MAF sensor.. so i cannot think anything else relate to current symptom I am having.

theres actually a bunch of things that can cause what youre experiencing. vacuum leak in the brake booster, problems with fuel delivery, a not so great batch of gas, as i stated earlier the fuel breather valve is another. read up on the forums about this problem and youll see many people have had that problem and it was related to various things. ICVs are very expensive and just taking someones word for it after little info will be an expensive experiment. the throttle actuators do not cause erratic idle they throw codes and put the car in limp mode when one fails. ICV failures usually throw a code as well so i think you should read around others whove posted about this

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...el+purge+valve

heres one long post where everyone assumed it was the ICV and it turned out to be an $80 fuel purge valve

THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Just order the fuel breather valve from ECS.
I will give it try, I hope this solve the whole problem.

Currently chasing this same symptom. It’s been on and off for a while, maybe happened once or twice a year now it’s about once a week. I’ve watched fuel trims, O2 sensors, vaccuum while driving home from work and nothing really sticks out when it starts. I have noticed it’s less severe in cold weather, probably due to denser air….amd it only starts when the engine is at temp. Mostly happens after I get off the highway and sitting at the next light. Then usually solid for a while, doesn’t happen every red light.

I’ve read another thread pasted below, seems like this problem has been around for a while. Only definitive solution was the fuel breather, which I was leaning towards because it acts the same exact way.

https://www.m3post.com/forums/showth...1191775&page=2

If anyone has had success with this I’d appreicate any insight. A lot of parts were thrown at this issue by many people in these threads, most of which I’ve personally already done in the past 5 years just in maintenance.

I purchased another fuel breather valve (replaced it a couple years ago when getting the stuttering after fill up). I may just try and see what happens.

I've been told by two separate BMW techs to treat them as a wear item. Expect to change them periodically. Not sure of the mileage interval for failure though. Mine was changed at around 90K miles, still fine at 113K

Changing out the breather valve fixed this issue for me. The first time it failed I was only having issues after filling up (years ago while still under warranty ) This past summer it occasionally happened after gas, but more just in stop and go traffic. Cheap and easy fix.

Nice, thank you both. Good news that it’s an easy fix, my current valve has about 50k on it for reference. I’ll throw it in this weekend.

I have these same symptoms and thinking I will do this. I have the plenum removed anyways to replace a few other parts so figured I might as well get this one done too. One question regarding the part - FCP euro sell this part made by Bosch for $48 compared to the BMW part that ECS sells for $110. Is this something I can go with the Bosch part or does it have to be BMW original? Not sure who is the OEM for this part anyways. Can someone please chime in?

I bought the Bosch part initially, and again for this round. Don’t think there’s a difference except for the BMW branding on the $110.

Fuel breather valve. I changed my last weekend. Its a bitch to remove. Need to push in, than squeeze the clip, and pull outward to remove.

Finished the job, it was pretty straight forward-thanks to the awesome write up by forum member Rat3d ///M back in 2016. BTW the valve on the car was the same Bosch product.
