I switched to M1 0w40 at 46,000 miles, im at 48500 and ive had to add about 1.5 qts. No oil leak... is this of any concern?

No concern. Seems to be a pretty common theme to burn more oil after switching to a lighter grade. Many have reported that this eventually slows down.

My car use to burn 1L per 2500kms-3000kms when I use Castrol TWS 10w-60. I switched to Liqui Moly 10w-60 for the first time when I did my last oil change, and it seems like the car burns less oil than Castrol. I am at 4500 kms since last oil change, the car has not show me any adding oil warning, oil is still at the same level as the day of oil change according to the electric meter.

Interesting result from Liqui Moly, but not surprising as LM and Redline both have 10W60 oils with higher viscosity than Castrol TWS. Currently I'm using about 1 L of Castrol TWS 10W60 for every 8000 km (5000 mi).

However, I'm always curious about other members who didn't bother to break the engine as per the manual and don't burn any oil. The 5 series I leased while back, I drove it hard from the very beginning and it was the 1st non M bimmer that I can say drank oil consistently. Didn't have the heart to try that with the m3 since it wasn't a lease.

Swifty, the "break-in mode" on the motor can't really be disregarded since it sets a low redline in the engine computer that only the dealer can turn off...so I'm not exactly sure what you mean.

What I meant was the manual states to vary the RPM and don't exceed 4500 or 5500 (can't member which) during the initial 1200k. You can definitely drive the car above 5500 during that period if you want.

However there has been conflicting reports, where people state the best way to break in a car is to drive at WOT to seat the bearings and prevent engine from drinking too much oil etc.

I bought my ZCP 2011 M3 CPO'd at 30k miles. Took it to my local dealer while it was still under original warranty and found out that it was overfilled. Local dealer told me the pressure in the engine was unsafe to drive. Some back and forth over who would pay for the flush and new oil, but the short of it is they refilled the oil.

500 miles later and I get a low oil warning error come up. I take it back and they tell me these models like to drink about a quart every 5k miles and that maybe they under filled it a touch to be on the safe side. They tell me they topped it off with another quart and to keep an eye on it.

Two things I can confirm. 1-These cars do drink oil, and one should expect to be topping this off 3 to 4 times in a 15k change interval. 2-Skilled BMW techs from 2 different dealerships can't manage to fill the oil level optimally.

I have been monitoring my oil consumption over the last three oil changes, and I have averaged 2500 km before topping up with 1n litre. It's very interesting how consistent my engine has been in this regard.

89k miles 2011. Broke-in old school. Never need to add oil between change. 7500 miles interval for 10w-60, 5000 miles for 0w-40. I have tried both. Electronic dip stick doesn't drop any mark.

Depends on how I drive it, if I keep the RPMS up for long periods of time 2+hrs then it will need half a quart every 3-4k if I just do normal spirited driving then I need no refills between 5,000 mile oil changes.

After carefully creeping up on the e-gauge 'full' mark, didn't see any change in the oil level after 4,000 miles of mixed driving. Interesting that some examples use oil and some don't . I kept expecting the level gauge to drop and it didn't. No track days though. As many have mentioned, it is OK to use some oil, and I've had other engines that did so with no ill effects.

my 08 is much the same. no track time for my car. It I drive my car "enthusaliastically" and it doesn't use oil. I keep a bottle with me in case. But never had to use it.

Mine seams to be consuming about 1qt ever 6000km-7000km of mainly city driving.

Had my rod bearings swapped about 2500km ago and thus the oil was changed, and since then the electronic guage has dropped from right in the middle to 1-2 (cant tell for sure) ticks above the bottom line. Guessing in about 1000 or so km it will probably drop again and hit the bottom line.

Same thing here … i was thinking about it today as i have put about 2000 miles on my new to me 2011 and the digital dip-stick hasn't moved yet.
In my 2008 i would have had to add a half litre already.
Its days like today when i really wish i could pull out the dipstick and have a visual check!!!
Oh well … it is a digital world.

One quart per oil change for my 08.

for the past two oil changes (1st one 100% M1 0w40, 2nd change 80% M1 0w40, 20% TWS). Both requires around 1 Quart top up per 3000-4000km ish. My OCI is around 7500km-10,000km or every half year whichever comes first.

Notice usually Oil Level stays pretty constant and drops very slow during day to day driving in city, and usually level drops after some spirited highway driving (which i don't do so often).

Haven't had to add any oil between changes, but I have only had annual low mileage oil changes.
