Trying to update Combox to UPD01008

I successfully retrofitted a COMBOX and CIC to my M3--and I'm super stoked about this. The BT A2DP function works and sounds good.

When reviewing any potential SW updates, I see that the Combox does indeed have one available. This is my current one when viewing in the CIC SW support screen:

Multimedia MX-003.004.031

Telephone TX-003.004.031

This is my issue, I've downloaded the latest SW to a FAT32 flash drive, and I cannot get it to flash. I know the USB stick in the armrest is getting power because I have a blinky light on it and also verified the black FAKRA is connected to the module. Doing a bunch of research of this has pretty much led me to a dead-end. Certainly I'm convinced it's a coding parameter or something. Also, I verified I have the appropriate $6FL in the FA. NCSEXPERT shows the USB coding aktiv and Here's some of the links I've been trying to follow.

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1061869

Any ideas?

P.S. (also tried a different USB stick--no success)

CIC is a CIC.C1A version
Combox is a CMEDIAR.C05 version

Current Combox SW

Here is the current SW on the Combox. One thing I think is very interesting is the text is all "greyed out" for the version and such.

Could that point towards the issue?

I did this last week sans was only successful using a tiny capacity usb stick (512 mb).

I had read someone else trying and failing even with a 10gb so found the smallest I could.

I made sure it was visible when looking in external drives and then used the option under the settings menu for software updates.

Make sure the file is in the root directory of the stick.

Thanks for giving feedback. I too, tried with a 512MB USB stick and still didn't work.

And yeah, I made sure to have the .bin file as the only thing on the root directory.

When you say that you "made sure it was visible," do you mean in the CIC menu where it lists things like BT, AUX, and the flash drive? This might be a good thing for me to verify as I don't recall if it actually "saw" the USB stick or not. Hmmm.

I'll try again later tonight and see what I see....

Yes I do,

Did you remember to format the new stick to Fat32 first? Ntfs or exfat don’t work.

Make sure the USB drive is also in MBR format not GPT. That might help too.

3rd time is the charm!

So I tried with a 3rd USB stick this time and it worked! It was a 2 GB stick. This one was also in FAT32 but it could've also been in MBR in addition. At any rate, it worked!

Thank you guys for the responses!

After lot of searching on the internet I found version 1006 and 1008.
Sent me a PM and I'll be happy to send you the files, it won't let me attach them here.

Version 1006 I was able to install successfully with a USB flash drive.
For version 1008 I haven't been able to get it to update, it says something like 'Update on USB is not the latest version'.

Anyone knows how to go around this 'problem'?

could you link me update 1006? Before I go buy a flash drive, "I tried like 5 that i have" update 1008 keeps saying the same as you that the update on the usb is not the latest.

Thanks!

I've been trying to update my retrofitted combox with exactly the same software as the OP, with the same error. Does anyone have the UPD01006.bin file, could they share it?

Thanks!

Hi guys, emanmor345 thecarfixer

I couldn't upload the file itself here, but here's the link to download.
This is version 1006, hope this helps.

Also has anyone been able to flash version 1008? It keeps saying that it's not the newest version.

Download link v. 1006:

OK, so 1006 worked straight away. Will try 1008 again!

[edit] 1008 doesn't work, still, says the version on the USB is older.

Yes, it was the same for me.
I'll try 1008 later with a different USB, trying to find one not bigger than 2GB.

I tried it on a few different USB sticks (changed partition sizes to 2Gb), FAT, or FAT32 and same error.

It’s interesting because the OP got it to work..

Make sure nothing else is on the flash drive and that you have the .bin on the root directory. Probably the real issue here is making sure the flash drive is in MBR and not GPT.

Same USB for 1006 was used...

[edit] Infact, I converted the USB stick I used to MBR to test, same error, update on USB is older than on the system.

Is it possible that the CIC is not on version CIC.C1A, and therefore can't accept 1008? Just a thought. I believe you need an ICOM to update the CIC properly if I recall.

I've updated it myself to C1A, I used the patcher to install FSCs that won't work without this code index.

It makes no difference of the firmware level of the CIC for this update. I did mine, with the file I've linked above, quite a while before I had the CIC updated
