Rear trunk floor tray removal

For those of you guys who removed your trunk floor panel/tray, did you remove the heat shields below as well?

The piece I'm referring to is a black plastic tray that covers the hole in the trunk. Hard Motorsports makes a filler panel to replace it (link below):

https://www.hardmotorsport.com/hard-...-filler-panel/

There appears to be some plastic lines (EVAP?) and a portion of the battery cable that are attached to the tray. They'll also be exposed with the heat shield removed. Would this be an issue?

if you want to hold off for just a little bit, i might be producing a carbon panel. it might be a little more than the hard motorsport part, but it will be nicer.

the only thing attached to the plastic tray is the heat shields. they attach towards the right center with a bolt. i zip tied them together to keep some tension on them (they are also secured at the sides) and it kept the shields from drooping onto the exhuast. no new noises.
the charcoal filter is its own appraratus. there are some clip-on evap hose brackets but if you retain the heat shields, they will be fine. i don't remember exactly how they were routed, but it was not an issue.

Is there anything special to know about removing this “apparatus”?

That's great to hear! I contemplated on zip tying them together as well but was concerned they would droop over time. I'll give that a try.

you can see the eyelet near my thumb that secures the shields to the plastic tray. i drilled a small hole near the lip and pulled some zip ties tight. the trays are tight, and i didn't re-secure it to the plastic pan because i'm going to have a carbon version made soon.

i the tubes might secure with some of those press-in clips, but they were pretty secure. i think i zip tied them to limit vibration.

there is probably some programming that needs to be done, but it will for sure throw a check engine light if you mess with it. looking at weight figures from parts diagrams, the filter, tubes, and plastic bracket should yield about 5lbs.

I replaced mine with 2.5mm carbon sheet and the noise was unbearable. I liked the idea of cleaner air back there and planned to build a small diffuser to keep air from turning the rear bumper into a parachute.

The weight savings for me was in the worst place (rear) and it was only 2-3lbs I think. I also moved to Akra since then which is much quieter so I might try installing it again.

A core material would likely help with the noise as well as add a lot of stiffness. This would work well if you planned to hang a diffuser or put some weight on the panel.

Do you have suggestions for sourcing foam core sheets in 1/2 - 3/4" range? I'm planning to experiment with vacuum infusion for a custom splitter but I'm having trouble finding foam core material. Trying to avoid ordering online and having to use 2 sheets side by side alignmed parallel with the car as that'd reduce rigidity by a lot I assume (total noob).

You’ll have to buy online unless you can find a supplier. I get mine from Dallas, TX.

The core has to have holes in it or scored so air has a path to escape.
