Can there be a louder muffler than an ACM-mod OEM muffler?

Just a thought I've been mulling over, I currently have an ACM modded muffler, and even with the test pipes I just added, I still find my exhaust quiet compared to other s65's I hear.

As I understand it, the ACM mod cuts open the top of the muffler, and bypasses all the muffling by welding in straight pipes. Straight in and out. Could there be louder mufflers for the e9x m3? Is this not essentially a straight pipe?

I've been thinking about grabbing one of these megan supremo exhausts.. 600 bucks.. could that be louder than my ACM mod exhaust?

Garage List
The problem is that the rear seat is too good at sound insulation. Take out the rear seat-back and it will be much louder. Additionally, take out the trunk floor cover and it will be much much louder.

haha funny you say that, I actually rode around like that (no trunk liners at all or the flat trunk floor, rear seats folded down) and it was hilarious how much louder it became, even before I did the test pipes. Thanks for reminding me I'm gonna put the seats down again

I only had all the liners and stuff out to change my rear shocks, I enjoyed the louder exhaust noise, but tire noise was MUCH louder and you could hear pebbles flying everywhere so I put it all back

I was feeling the same as well with my ACM, I was hoping test pipes would make it quite a bit louder

The Eisenman Race is pretty loud. IMO the MPE and test pipe combo sounds the best.

If the ACM mod is basically just a straight pipe, the only things you could do to make it even louder would be to remove the resonators/middle mufflers and remove the cat converters. At the most extreme end, run a dump valve right off the header that bypasses the exhaust tubing all together. Performance might suffer slightly though.

I'm still confused about why you want something that loud. Hearing loss is cumulative. Do you want the cops to be constantly hassling you? Do you want everyone around you to hate you? Do you want your neighbors to say, "oh it's that frickin guy again"?

I had the Megan Supremo with straight pipes and it was insanely loud. I threw a pair of resonators on and it's now the perfect volume. Loud when you get on it but no drone on the highway.

Honestly the current set up isn't crazy loud, I really expected it to blow my ears out just driving around town, but it's pretty mild until you go full throttle. Stock hemi challengers around town sound louder..

I'm not after insane loud sound, more just a nice grunt, good base and a nice exotic tone. My current set up sounds pretty good, but full throttle in the middle of the rev range doesn't sound great.

@shiza, thanks. I honestly may just order one and see how good/bad it is. On amazon right now for under 600 bucks lol

We all have different tastes and it's crazy how different the S65 can sound from one exhaust to another. But if you have the ACM mod & test pipes and you still think your car is too quiet, well then I don't know what to tell you. Much more than that is just noise - not in a good way.

Where are you driving? Out in open fields? Drive through a city street and you'll be heard from blocks away. If you haven't already, maybe try letting someone drive your car for you and stand outside as it goes by - that might change your perception on just how loud your car seems to everyone else.

Acm mod sounds like dog shit I’m sorry to break it to you.

Most of the high end mufflers, IPe, MS GT2, etc are louder than the ACM mod but are still Tolerable for everyday usage.

Don’t believe me? Get a cat less xpipe with acm mod and all hell will break loose.

Eisenmann Race + TP's will wake the dead when you're aggressive with the throttle.

Cruising around it's surprisingly civil, this is why I love this combo so much.

Let me know how it compares to the ACM, I always thought the megan didn't seem as loud in videos

My Megan sounded a tiny bit louder than stock when I had just the muffler installed. It was very loud after I removed both cats and resonators though.

Yeah a straight piped stock muffler will be obnoxious.. I had a Megan once, looks great but even at wot on the track no one could tell it from stock with a stock x pipe..

OP, I get that you want to revel in a roaring V8 symphony. I wanted the same thing in my 20's. But consider the regrets of a guy born in 1946 and therefore old enough to be your great-grandfather.

After heavily modifying the exhaust on 5 or 6 performance cars and suffering the consequences -- angry neighbors, psychotic dogs, constant droning, setting off car alarms, migraines, hearing damage, screaming at passengers, getting pulled over, garage full of failed exhaust parts, credit-card debt -- I'm happy at my advanced age with the ACM mod and nothing else.

It's refined, passably "exotic," aggressive on WOT, and relatively cheap. It wears well. The only other change I might make, strictly cosmetic, is the stainless, single-walled EAS exhaust tips, which look like the tips of an MPE without the logo.

Look at the second post here.. https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=601556

The acm mod still uses the Helmholtz chamber and other than that it is straight through. A different muffler will not only look better, save weight, and give you proper muffling that will create a much better sound as opposed to just noise with a straight through setup. I had the borla atak when I went catless and got rid of it due to it being quite loud. That's certainly a more affordable exhaust option that looks and sounds great.
