That is not how lemon laws work, and unless he can prove they outright lied to him about an existing problem, he's SOL. Buyer beware.

Thats not normal. You could do a coolant flush and check the head gasket.

Just thought I would give anyone interested an update on this.

Car ran fine, did not show any signs of coolant in the oil. No smoke or coolant smell from exhaust, no signs of a blown head gasket. Flushed the cooling system and drove the car.

Now 10,000 miles later the car still runs fine and still no signs of head gasket problems. Coolant res has a tiny bit of oil residue on cap but coolant otherwise looks fine.

PS:
Though the rod bearings might not like that. Go easy on it..
I would say head gasket too. All the oil and water passageways mate on the surface of the head and block. When a car overheats enough and the heads warp you get cross contamination. At the worst I have seen it the other way antifreeze in the oil and if driven longer enough the motor is junk. When the antifreeze goes to oil it looks like a milkshake.
The worst is when the antifreeze leaks into a cylinder and then it hydraulics. That is you can't compress water so the side of the piston breaks off.
