New Built S65 Engines (4.1L and 4.5L) from CarBahn Autoworks

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi Everyone,

We’re back with some updates from CarBahn Autoworks – this time regarding our S65 Engine builds. We are now offering two new variants of the CarBahn Autoworks built S65 engines, one 4.1L and the other a 4.5L, both intended for forced induction applications. The 4.1L bored engine features high performance over-sized forged pistons, a forged crankshaft with stock stroke, and high-strength forged Carrillo connecting rods. The totally cost of the build is $19,999.00 plus a donor engine. The bore is increased to 92.5 mm. Read more on the 4.1L engine here: https://carbahnautoworks.com/product...harger-engine/

The 4.5L stroked and bored engine features over-sized forged pistons, a billet crankshaft with increased stroke, and high-strength forged Carrillo connecting rods. The bore is increased to 92.5mm and the stroke is increased to 83mm. The cost of this build is $24,999.00 plus a donor engine. Both are available with three possible compression rations, 10-1, 10.5-1 and 11-1. Read more on the 4.5L engine here: https://carbahnautoworks.com/product...harger-engine/

These two new builds are in addition to two other street S65 engine variants we already produce. One 4.2L, the other a stroked and bored 4.6L available either with or without cams. All of these engine builds are intended for the E9x platform, or the motor swap of your choice

For a little taste of how these engines perform, check out this video of the 4.6L S65 on the Dyno:

Thanks all, any questions are welcome!

Curious what the expected service life is of one of the strokers for street use.

Given they have the experience to work with Alusil properly, the same as a new engine from BMW.

Given they also probably know how to set a bearing clearance properly, probably double service life of a new S65 from the factory.

If you want to see something fascinating in this video, watch the throttle actuator linkages to the ITBs moving rapidly during the ramp run.

People underestimate how much is going on in the control arrangement for butterfly position. (Assuming this is running on an mss60 *edit for technical accuracy*).

@jcolley you think? Seriously, I mean. Most, even the best cannot match, factory reliability and most times a performance build is not designed to do so.

If you're right, that puts this option on a different level for rebuilds or replacement.

I wish I had $25k to spend on an engine for my 10 year old car. I am happy for those who do — 4.1-4.5L with forced induction would make these old cars competitive powerwise with the current performance coupes and sedans.

Very nice builds. Resonable prices too.

Over the last few years advances have been made on this platform: reliable heavy duty DCT transmission upgrades, E85 and fuel pumps, tuning, and the s65 itself, made for FI. I remember when articles were stating that strokers and FI were incompatible. The first few who tried to usually blew up after a while.

Honestly I do. Remember "factory reliability" means precision engineering and a massive amount of of number crunching to ensure that the *majority* of the engines do not fail before the end of the warranty period. The Germans are exceptional at this and it's clear in the choice of materials used in a lot of components that longevity beyond warranty was not even on the list, much less at the top of it.

Alusil motors usually hold up pretty well. I would make the assumption that Steve brought the knowledge with him to the new business to bore/hone/expose these properly. I don't think any of these as per the posted specs would be on the ragged edge of reliability, most of it seems reasonable.

I would put my money on a built engine from a good builder before a stock S65 from BMW any day.

I sooo want a NA stroker. Time to start saving!!

Curious why the new 4.1L capacity when Carbahn already have a 4.2L kit available?

Issues with the 4.2?

If you haven't done RB yet, do this instead and then it's equivalent to a $2,100 discount. Car mod math.

I assume these arn't sleeved. The question is how much boost they'll hold safely.
Then there's always the question of what SC to use with it, who's going to tune it, ect. Nobody will be the responsible party should something go south. Not that one can't build a SC stroker but usually it's not easy to corrdinate such a project.

Curious if you guys can provide some specs on these engines;
1) Rod/stroke ratio
2) Cylinder-to-cylinder wall thickness
3) Any o-rings needed?
4) What tuning capabilities are provided with the engine (if any), software...etc?
5) Piston speed comparison for the stock vs different derivatives of the engines.
6) How much boost is considered safe for each build?
7) Warranty?

I looked thru the website, but couldn't find this information, so if I missed something, pls reference it.

Thanks for the info!

I have the E90 S3R.
Just got an oil report back from blackstone, and it isn’t pretty.
Waiting for a follow up report before I get too excited.

The mileage on the engine is 100,000 km or 60,000 miles, so well within their advertised longevity for built motors.
Having 2 M3’s, I had neglected to do an oil change on this one for about a year, because I was focused on the other for resale. Since I now have a baseline, I can trend the concentrations of metals and I confirm any issues.

When I purchased the car, I did leak down and pressure tests, all excellent. So in one year, I can’t imagine why I would be even considering rod bearings or God forbid, a head gasket.

Anyway, it’s an ongoing process, that I’m happy to share, especially if people are considering the amount of money these engines cost.
