Years ago I used to dirt track my Grasshopper. I still have it. I even still have my Blackfoot. It was the original monster truck built off "the frog" chassis. I'll see if I have any pics. :-)

They were pretty intricate, at least I thought they were when I was 12. Oil filled shock absorbers that you had to fill with oil yourself, etc. I feel like I learned a lot about mechanical shit from building and repeatedly fixing those cars. My point is that I would personally opt for as much assembly required as possible, particularly for someone that is buying for their kid, because the assembly and constant fixing is half the fun and 90% of the time spent on these things.
