Bought mine one week before my 30th Birthday (2 weeks ago). I've always wanted an M car and very very very glad I, for once, procrastinated on finding one.. After a year of being dead set on a F10 M5, was driving my wifes 335i (which I used to DD due to a longer commute) when I was rear ended at a stop-light. It was totaled, insurance gave me wayyyy more than I would have ever dreamed selling it (2008 w/ 120K miles).. Then the next day I found an e90 1 mile from my house, drove it... yeah, lets just say I forgot all about Turbos being the most fun car to drive. I don't think I ever want a turbo'd BMW now that I have felt this engine.

16. Sort of my dad's excuse to get a sports car. He daylied it for two years, then gave it to me. I'm just lucky to have a great dad. Not Daily driving it yet (will be for senior year/college), it mainly gets used by me and him going for joyrides. Its my dream car.

Just turned 32. Got my e93 m3 which was my first one in 2014 when I was 27. Had my e92 almost 3 years now and it’s the longest I’ve kept a car and don’t have any plans to sell it any time soon.

Interesting results. I would have thought that more people in the cruising and mid life crisis range considering the maint costs but I guess 70-100k is now the new common cost of a high performance car and used M3s represent a real bargain. To be honest, I dont think anyone under 21 has any business having car like this. I for sure would have killed myself many times over. I kinda feel sorry for people under 25 having these cars as it takes away from what you have to look forward to later in life when you can better handle the responsibility. I dont think I could have fully enjoyed it until I could afford to properly take care of it. And to me, taking care of a car like this means proactive replacement of parts that fail which costs a small fortune every two years or so. But I dont plan to ever sell this car.

Well theres more to cars than an E9X M3. If anyone has an M3 under 21, there are much more expensive and higher performing cars to look forward to. Saying this an an M3 forum will get be shot.

The fact that the car is pretty reliable for a performance vehicle apart from rod bearing bomb/throttle actuator also helps to lower average age, I think.
Parts aren’t jaw droppingly expensive like that of AMG either.. pretty reasonable.

Did I have the experience? No? Was I overconfident? Yes. Did I get very lucky on a handful of occasions? Yup. But my passion for automobiles and driving gave me some certain level of respect for the machine that kept me from making any life-altering mistakes. Maybe there was a dash of luck sprinkled in here and there. The fact that you understand you are inexperienced speaks volumes of your level of maturity. I'm more likely to say that now as a 35 year old, who, by all accounts, has a lot of life experience (I've opened and ran businesses, I've been in the military, purchased homes, etc). But I'll be the first to say "I don't know shit" — when I was a kid- I knew everything and nobody could tell me otherwise. For what it's worth, my 3rd car (93 Mustang), at 18, was probably a little faster than my M3 (in a quarter mile, forget taking any turns). Difference was, the mustang didn't have 12 airbags or whatever cars have now, didn't have the braking ability and ABS, DSC, the warning systems when tire pressure got low, the agility, PDC, etc. The ONLY thing I would imagine being an issue for someone at a young age is proper maintenance. When I was 18... I'd put new wheels on a car with my last dime, when the car desperately needed brakes. The maintenance costs are high, and things like motor mounts suck when you could spend the money on an intake. Most 18 year olds will skip the motor mounts and do the intake instead. Most young people would struggle with the maintenance on a car like this. Obv we don't know your financial situation. If money isn't an issue for your family, then consider yourself lucky, thank your parents, and don't let anyone ever give you shit for being dealt a good hand. If you're bagging groceries to barely be able to put gas in the car- I don't know how you're going to afford throttle actuators, brakes, rod bearings, tires, etc. But- you'll likely learn a good lesson about hard work and protecting investments early on, whether you work 18 hour days to care for it or you sell the thing on Craigslist for 1/3 of what you paid for it. Good luck, no matter what your story or how it pans out.
