FMR (Footwell Module) Solution - Local
Hey,
So, this weekend I decided to install my new alcantara steering wheel, DCT boot along with the red start button. The steering wheel and DCT boot are from Coby who make awesome products btw In doing so, I disconnected the negative terminal from my battery since I was messing around with removing the airbag and wheel etc...After the install, and reconnecting the negative terminal, I had the following errors: Sorry for the length wise pics, wasn't thinking when I took them. Anyways, what didn't work in the car:
A quick scan of the car and search resulted in the FMR module being either completely shot or potentially burnt out or software lost. I searched around for a local solution and came across SpeedoTronix located in Concord (close to Vaughan). I called Russ the owner on Saturday morning and he promptly returned my call, confirmed he also thought it was the FMR and he could fix it. Monday morning came, I drove up and 30 minutes later the car was 100% back to normal. He removed the FMR, fixed it and did so professionally. Highly recommend his services if anyone is like me and doesn't want to mess around with the electronics themselves or doesn't feel like giving BMW $1,200 for a new programmed FMR. DM me if you want to know the price, I believe it's his normal rate but it was very reasonable in my opinion. Just thought I would share in case anyone has a similar failure in the car and could use a local shop who has done them frequently and clearly knows what he is doing!! When I started researching on here I saw numerous posts of guys replacing the FRM with either new or used units that were flashed to their car. I much preferred keeping the original part but just getting it repaired if possible. If not, then I would buy new from BMW or BPM in the States or something. BMW here quoted me $729 for the part and 3 hours of programming at $164 per hour. SpeedoTronix did everything in 30 minutes and for $200 bucks including taking it out and putting it back in the car.

The FRM is insanely touchy on these cars. Mine fried when I had to jump start my car. Thankfully there are a few people that can bring them back to life. There is a guy up in Newmarket that can do it for around $100 if you want to remove it yourself (that in itself is a pain). My revived one ended up giving me more problems later with the keyless entry and I ended up replacing the whole unit.

I want to thank you for posting this. I was experiencing electrical issues with my Mercedes C Class (in summary, the car wouldn't pass an etest because of a bad wire somewhere between the ECU and OBD port). After ripping my hair out trying to fix the issue and visiting several shops (including Mercedes), Russ at Speedotronix was able to quickly diagnose and quick the issue!

Glad to know there's someone knowledgeable with it locally. I had this exact same problem last year when I had my car's exhaust modded at a shop. Ended up the frying the FRM module and they had no idea how to fix it. Was quoted $700+ to get it replaced. I was pulling my hair out figuring out what to do while driving the car in that state for over 3 weeks and worrying that I might get pulled over for running the headlights on during daytime while never able to use the signal lights. Eventually sending the unit over to the States where a knowledgeable tuner helped me fixed it.

The only ones that we have for the M3 are the blower motor wire that catches fire and the Takata airbag.

FYI: You will loss any coding, tunes etc... when changing out the FRM. I hope you have files, cables etc... to reload them. |
