How do I get this E92 paired to an iPhone X via Bluetooth?

I was messing around with Bluetooth a couple of days ago. I opened up the Bluetooth prefs on the iPhone X and the car showed up in the list, along with a 5 digit number. A control knob appeared on the screen, which obviously was linked to the iDrive knob. I entered the 5 digit code in using the iDrive controller, and then I got the spinning sphincter wheel. After about 20 seconds it told me "Passkey Failed" and try again.

I can't get this phone paired. Upon reviewing my VIN my coder said I definitely have Enhanced Bluetooth. What should I be doing to get this phone working with the car?

February 2011 build date, if that matters.

Edit: I am a complete idiot.

Its been so long since I BT paired anything that I forgot that the BT receiver broadcasted a device ID number. I kept thinking that was the Passkey. That 5 digit number just identified the car visually. I ignored it and selected a random number in the iDrive - the keypad appeared on my iPhone, I entered the same 4 digit number and everything worked. I am overjoyed. Still a complete idiot, but an overjoyed one.

Now the big question is why does the music on the phone come through at very reduced volume? It also sounds compressed, not as bad as AM broadcasts but still pretty compressed.

Have you tried pressing the "volume up" button on your phone to make sure volume is at max? I think that might actually still have some effect while on bluetooth
