Question Cracked manifold??

Hello

I have been recently told by a independent garage that my 2007 E92 M3 has a manifold crack. This was diagnosed by the mechanic though standing by the car and simply listening - so no proper diagnostic yet. He has told me that almost all E92 M3's have this issue and if he was to replace the manifold it would just happen again in 10k - 20k. To me my car sounds like every other E92 M3 at idle. I mean there is a slight ticking/knocking but nothing that really stands out or loud enough to cause concern. Furthermore the car has been into BMW and checked over countless times an they have not picked up on anything... What does everyone else think of this?

Thanks!
Redmond

Hey X88RED,
Ticking in the engine bay may be a normal sound for the car, or may be an indicator of rod bearing wear. There are a bunch of videos on this site of the ticking sound and I would listen to those to see how they compare to your sound. I would be more concerned about that than a cracked manifold. I would get a second opinion from another shop. Check out these threads:

Run Away from that mechanic. The sound he's talking about does sound like a leaking manifold but that ticking is normal s65 engine noise.

Yeah wtf diagnosed by listening. Doesn't sound like he has much of a clue.

I don think I've heard of a cracked manifold on these cars before, and I can say with certainty it is not a common problem that will come back in 10-20k miles if fixed.

He's saying its a cracked mani because f the s65 ticking noise. It sounds just like an old v8 with either cracked headers or a leaking header gasket. But its a normal M engine noise.

Has this guy ever worked on this engine before? I would bet not. A lot of these "independent master BMW mechanics" never worked on anything beyond 328i's. I had a supposedly very knowledgeable local mechanic ask me if it was a real M3 or a badged 3xxi. I was certain he was joking... he wasn't.

Send a message via Yahoo to BzsBimmer
If it was cracked, it should show up on a smoke test

I believe this shows up on the iDrive screen if it were indeed the case

I have been through 1 Laser, at least 3 Talons and a few Eclipses... Not to mention two Evos. I have a soft spot for 4g63 cars.

Unless this guy is Jesus, or some type of god who can diagnose problems just by listening, I wouldn't trust him.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm going to stay away from that mechanic from now on for sure. Just out of curiosity someone mentioned rod bearing failure.. What symptoms would this show other than the ticking noise?

my understanding is that usually by the time you have any sorts of 'symptoms' its too late.

any sort of knocking / "the wrong type" of clicking / ticking coming from the underside means that the bearings are already fucked and at very minimum, gouging the shit out of your crank.

i could be wrong tho... im no expert, just going on what i read in the countless threads here.

Fair enough! Tbh my car has been to BMW so many times and I always seem to ask them about a slight knocking noise I can hear. They have always said its normal don't worry - so I'm going leave it at that. It's just when hear all these horror stories it kinda makes you worry

The mechanic sounds like he is clueless. If this was a normal issue for a M3 you would hear about it. Who changes their manifold every 10-20k miles? This person sounds like a terrible mechanic. Stay away. If you want to help diagnose the ticking sound you can always send in an oil sample to blackstone.

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free-test-kits.php

If there are high levels of copper, lead or iron there may be rod bearing issue.
