It seems to get smoother if I go faster over the speed bump.

I usually go about 25 mph over the ones in my development. I wish I could drive that fast safely in the grocery store lots. But it's not safe so I have to slow down to 10 mph and the car doesn't go over as smoothly.

Regarding the question as to how to drive over them...

Clutch? No clutch? gas? First gear?? LOL!!

On the real though... If you are going over huge dips, you need to throw the car in sport mode. This helps with scraping in many situations.

Here is what i do...

slowly get the fronts over ..very slowly...
then...FLOOR IT!!!!! and brake when the rears are approach the bump
...
For DCT users.... you should get the fronts over... full stop...then use launch control till the rears get to the bump....

i have found that this the best way to make myself appear as the largest douche possible....

other ways to ultimate douchebaggery...

Here's how i do it and I used to live in a country that had speed bumps every 500ft (kidding, but we did have some serious speed bumps of varying sizes).

- As you approach the bump, slowly depress the brake to slow the car down about 90%
- just as you hit the bump, clutch in and let go of the brake
- when the rear wheels clear the bump, re-engage the clutch

As for gear selection that is entirely dependent on you and the size of the speed bump.

This formula works flawlessly every time, excluding bumps that you have to crawl over because they will cut your car in half. ITs the smoothest way to get over the longer ones and short 1 footers

I assume you are not asking about the tiny, sharp ones shaped like mountains - for theses there are no techniques, just go straight and VERY slow.

better ground clearance in the rear. Usually can take the bumps at 40-45 mph.
But you can only use low gear in reverse.

I'm so scared after reading this that so many new stick drivers picked new M3's as they're first manual car .....i mean come on, you guys need to go buy a civic learn on that and then decide to pick up a 60 Plus thousand, 414hp car... I can not go and buy a used m3 knowing all these guys never drove stick before and are most deff messing these cars up I can't imagine all the stalls, grinds and, clutch burning going on I plan on keeping my car until the wheels fall off but I'd love to have another m3 but this confirms it Im officially scared to ever buy another m3 because there are bunch of noobiz out they're driving the wrong car WOW

From what I heard in the thread I created, the M3 is actually a pretty easy car to learn stick on. That said, I personally did as much homework as I could before I actually got the car in terms of learning best techniques, why things have to be done a certain way, what happens if you don't do them that way, what to avoid, and even how a manual transmission itself actually works (which was not only interesting, but caused a lot of what I'd been reading to make a lot more sense), and then of course creating the thread here to get advice from other members. Sure I stalled a few times the first week I had my car and I still stall on a hill occasionally from being overly gentle on the throttle to minimize wear on my clutch, but I've never ground a gear or ridden my clutch. Within a month of having my car I was shifting pretty consistently with slushbox smoothness up and down, without having had to spend extra cash, time, and effort to buy a beater beforehand.

Now of course not everyone does that amount of research before they drive, but some do. It's to their benefit after all since it will make their own car last longer and drive better.

As far as buying a used car, I guess that would be a concern with ANY manual transmission car, but honestly I think worst case is you'd have to replace the clutch plates. Stalling isn't a big deal and is overcome quickly, and the previous owner would've had to be a total moron to damage the actual transmission; grinding gears is a really unpleasant sound, so I feel like even a stick noob would figure out how to make that stop happening pretty fast.

This is exactly what I do. It all depends on the severity of the bump though.
