Hardtop Malfuntion / Not locked (00a6a1) (solved)

Hello. I got This error code after having a HARDTOP is not locked message on idrive. And problem is still persist. I looked at the CTM module using ISTA and I found out that Roof Package lowered on right says : YES but left side says : NO

I am assuming that this sensors are located under the 2nd large top part right next to the Hydraulic pump so when it extents all the way sends the signal as Yes or No! But I could not find the exact location and I am just assuming based on the CTM Manual which is :

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...ExE7vIN1LxoZLQ

And since the left side can not recognized as lowered so that does not give the signal to the Catch Hooks to lock the top when it is stowed!

Here is some pictures

Top is raised :

Top is Down :

And I tried to remove this black interior part from the 2nd raw of the top, I couldn't figure how to remove this part so I can reach at hydraulic pump to see the sensor!

And when it is all the way stowed, I tried to lift it up little bit with my hand, and I found out sensor switching to Yes and No on the RIGHT side of the Roof package. And does not do anything for left side! There is certainly something wrong on left side sensor! But I do not know where this sensor exactly located! If I can find it I will definitely do something. If you know where it is please let me know!!

Note : My left side string is frayed and I already ordered a new tension cords from ECSTunning . And I am seeing when it is on high tension, frayed part sticks on the hole so it might effect the sensor somehow! (I hope)

I replaced the cord http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...9#post19824619 and still having the same issue. It recognizes the right side of the roof package is lowered as "Yes", Left side is "No"

What I realized is when the roof package is stowed while the back (trunk) part is open, if I manually try to lift up the roof slightly, right side switches from Yes to No. So it is somewhere either at the bottom of the trunk or on the hydraulic pump.

I need help for this case. I really could not see anything related to Right/Left Roof package lowering sensor information anywhere what so ever

I read almost each information (article) related to HardTop systems on ISTA, It does not say as Roof Package Lowered Sensor' but it says Hall Effect Sensor "Roof Package Stored" right and left, when they describe the Hall sensors and micro switches on Opened/Closed position guide.

And the place for this sensor is located on the right and left base plate in the luggage compartment.

Decription of the sensor is delivers a signal to the CTM when guide bolt of the front shell has reached the guide in the base plate. As of this position, the drive for hardtop locking can be activated and the rear module closed again.

Pictures related to this issue.

And Failure code is 00A6A1 and one of the symptom of this code is stored as l01209 Drive Unit for Hardtop Lock Faulty. I do not know why it does not give the direct code for the LEFT SIDE ROOF STORED SENSOR with the component code of l01204,l01590 instead of that, giving error as locking failure!

If the Roof package stored hall sensor is recognizing the Right side and does not recognize the left side, locking will not be activated. So it is most likely the issue here. I can see a very little picture of this sensor and it is really hard to tell where exactly it is! And the funny part is Left side is not pictured and it says on the description as Left side not shown (You can see on the 2nd picture)

So I looked that this Roof Package Lowered sensor and I was able to locate it! And there is only one sensor related to this lowering part. And right side has this sensor. I do not know why it says both side on the diagnosis program??????????

It is just confuses me NOTHING ELSE! And I was able to lock the Hardtop while it was stowed at the luggage. I found a very weird way to fix this problem without removing the BACK SEATS!

I used my ramps to make the surface UNEVEN! First I tired to raise Right Side higher than the Left side putting the left ramp 1 feet away since the right ramp is right under the tire! So right side was higher than the left side!

I tried it, it didn't work! And then I tried to raise left side higher than the right side using the same method! And it locked right away!

I parked the car by the GYM and forgot the issue and put the top UP accidently. And Of Course it failed to top down again!

So I came home and did the same method and it worked again!

And than I plugged in to the ISTA to see what are those sensors supposedly be read while it is in working condition!

And Va La , Left Side Roof Lowered was NO again! And then I looked at the Left Side, there is no sensor over there!!!!!!!!

SO this is something related to Roof package Alignment or something happened OUT OF BLUE since I only drive my car on Weekends and I always keep the top down since I do not drive the car in rain! How the heck it is misaligned ??????

Anyway, I guess I need to remove the BACK SEATs to see the Locking mechanism while the problem is persist in a FLAT Surface!

If you guys have any other suggestions, you re welcomed! Other than that I hope this STUDY helps other Convertible Owners NOT TO VISIT THE STEALER!

FIXED

Hello Everyone. So I was able to fix my issue today (Thank the Lord).

I spent good 4 hours to figure it out. First I remove the bottom part of my back seat to see how can I see the luggage part when the trunk is closed (Top Down Position). So I saw nothing (Lost 1,5 hours).

Then I remove the head rest area completely. That helped me to figure it out how the locking system working!

So what happens is when your Hard Top roof package is completely stowed, while the rear trunk cover is closing, it locks up the roof package from this front locking latch!

So mine was locking but It wasn't locking the way it is supposed to be. Since I can see how it looks like when the trunk is close, I tried to move the roof package to see it is loose or locked, So mine was locked and was not moving. That means, even I was getting HardTop malfunction, Hardtop is not locked, SO I was still able to drive without an issue at all! That's what I figure on my case! And then I realize how to fix it.

All I can say is you do not need to spend even 10 minute to fix this issue. You do not need to remove any panel to reach up the way I did. And of course YOU ARE NOT DROPPING YOU CAR TO THE DEALER!

If your issue is, Your top is closing normally but when you TOP Down everything seems normal but your windows are not rolling up back after the top is down, Most likely your issue is same with mine!

All you need to do is try to top up again, when the trunk lifts up, stop the process (Do Not let the roof package to lift up), And then you will see the lock points if you look at from the rear seat. Each side has 2 screw.

Unscrew them, then try to top down again. So it will self align itself then try to top up again. Do not let the roof package lift up. Screw them back tightly. That should solve the problem!

Mine works like a charm now.

Awesome job for figuring out the hardtop issue and fixing it! I bought my e93 in hopes of keeping it forever but I was worried about future issues with the top post warranty and that's one of the reasons why I sold it. I wish I were as handy as you are, can't imagine what that would've cost at the dealer (and they probably can't fix it and try to charge you for a whole new top).

I wish you were keeping it. Yeah I know. They can not fool me anymore! And I dedicated one of my laptop for ISTA. It is must to have this program if you do not want to go dealer at all. And of course I am trying my best!

Unless you brake or damage the roof part, everything can be fixed on roof package.

I bought GPL205 Grease and Gummi Pflege Stift to maintain the rubber parts this week. Extension seals look brandnew on my top since me and previous owner garage kept, And drive just for fun, I hope I will keep this car rest of my life without any issue!

and Thank you

Thank you very much. This will save me money in the future. I love my e93 M3. It's hard to let go with the hardtop and all coming from an e46 m3 convertible. Very nice to post the solution.

Hardtop malfuction, trunk not closing automatically anymore

I recently bought this second 320, 2007 convertible
love it

but now facing first problem
when taking down the top, the roof panel package and go in the trunk
all seems and sounds fine, but the the trunk won't close automatically

relieving the switch for a second let the procedure continue and trunk closes
no malfunction / error statements

wonder if this means "roof package stowed" sensor died on me.

from this thread at least i now know where to search for it

anybody any experience with this problem and having a better diagnosis?

support would be much appreciated

Ron

Hey there,

Your best option is to get an ISTA and diagnose the CTM module. CTM tells you every single sensor's position and status live. If that's the problem you will see that the stove sensor is not reading correctly or not!

I think im having the same issue except my top is stuck down. I tried running the opening procedure and pressing a little on both sides, and was able to get the top back up once. Then I lubed up all joints and connections, put it back down. Then back up again, and then down, now its down and stuck. How do I get it up out of the trunk? Nothing is moving and it is saying not locked.

Please help!!! I just want to get in there to re-work the torx and try what you did but the top is in the trunk and the trunk wont open.

Thanks!!!

What size are those torx? I am having same problem, but they are in there TIGHT and I almost stripped one.

My top goes down, but I get the red obstacle message when it is all the way down.

So I am soaking the screws in some penetrating spray before trying again. I think a Torx 45 is correct.

Anyway, I drove down the road with the top down, error gong pissing me off, and got to a light. I cycled the trunk and roof out of the cradle once and back in quickly and bam....no error. I just left it alone to enjoy for today.

Thanks to your post, my top is working again! I even had a BMW tech (off the clock) look at it and a Body Shop. They could not figure it out.

Thanks for the great work!

Having the exact same issue , so glad I found this post. I’m mechanical challenge so I’ll have to call in a friend but I hope this will solve my issue.. I can get it to go if I lower then raise the top slightly and re drop it , some times it takes but most time it takes a few tries. The other fix is to drive then hit a bump and that seems to click it into place or at least let the sensor think so.

Anyhow my question is it looks like the plastic cover over the rol bars etc cover one of the screws. In your pictures you don’t seem to have a cover over your metal roll bars. Did you just have it off prior to pictures and if so was that a pain to remove, what is also the deal with the marks to line up the torq screws. Is that a must to do? Thanks for any help.

Nevermind saw that I’m the first pics you have it on.. just have to remove I see

I pushed back on the bottom part of the plastic and was able to get my tool in there to loosen the bolt and re-tighten it without removing the black piece. Also, check to make sure the wire is in the clip for the sensor as it can come in the way of it making contact
