OEM Exhaust Mod

Hi all,

New to the forum (although lurking for ages). Just got myself a MY11 E92 M3 Competition pack and for the first time in 20 years of owning cars am so happy with it that i am resisting the urge to mess with it too much.

My only complaint is that the exhaust doesn't do the engine justice. In the spirit of keeping the car as 'BMW' as possible I was thinking of doing the OEM exhaust mod just so the car sounds a little bit more like the beast it is without looking any different.

I was wondering first if anyone has done this? If so were they happy? Secondly does anyone have a recommendation for where to do this in Sydney? And what the cost might be?

Thanks for the help

I have done It on mine, are super happy with the results, there is no drone at all.
I did the mod myself when the car was in for winter.
I also changed the tips to 88mm witch I also have made in the workshop.

I have done it myself too. Didn't use solid pipes. Instead, just wrapped them in a heat wrap for exhausts. Its explained very well how to do it here - https://www.exhaustmods.co.uk/e92-m3-exhaust-mod

Just find someone to weld back the back box. Definitely the best thing I have done to my car! It costed me like 40$ and it took 3 hours end to end.

Here is the result:

Love the tips, this is what I'm looking for. Got any pics of them installed on the car? Can I source them or have them shipped to Australia?

Do it! I picked up my E92 recently and previous owner had done it. Every drive I crack the windows just down 1 inch and the sound of those downshifts are addictive! Quoted from the previous owner "Gives me a woody everytime"

I question if its worth getting an aftermarket exhaust now too

This is a must OP.. If you don't go aftermarket, then definitely do the 2 pipe mod (not the ACM straight pipe method). And do solid pipes... I've heard of the wrapped versions not lasting the test of time. Eventually you might want more, then doing test pipes is highly recommended.

Thanks so much everyone for the advice. I am definitely convinced of the sound and will be doing it for sure.
Without a welder and the skill you have Dereli I think I will have to get an exhaust shop on the case.
If anyone has one they recommend that would be amazing

Its quite a job to do, as they are welded on, to line up the 4 pipes is not easy but doable.

As I live in Denmark I think it's better to find a local shop there can do stuff in stainless steel and make them do them, it's quite easy to do.

It's just 90mm thick wall tube, there has been milled down to 88mm.

Hey mate - got mine done in the South West at Budget Exhaust near Padstow/Bankstown.

Fadi who runs the shop there has done tonnes of these and his welding/workmanship is bang on!!

all up took around 4 hours, and the best $450 ive spent in a long time.

End result: google and youtube endless amounts of videos, but my take in real life is that its perfectly sedate up to 3000rpm, then after that it really opens up and by 8000 its epic.

i went for the 2 pipe mod, due to wife and kid who sit in the car sometimes, but you could easily go 2.5 pipes welded.

Good luck

I got mine done at Western Mufflers in Fairfield for $280 after having a custom muffler system made up that had too much drone. Sounds amazing after the mod.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice guys,

I am familiar with Budget Exhaust so think I will give them a go in the next few weeks.
As a side note did you guys have your exhaust 'chopped up' for the mod or did you buy a second hand standard exhaust to do it to?

Maybe being a bit pedantic but its nice to have the standard system waiting in the garage if I ever want to return the car to stock

Chop it up... no sense in storing another one, they are super easy to find used if needed, but you won't want to go back... but if you ever need to, it's easy to find one cheap.

you're definitely overthinking it.

after the chopped up exhaust goes back on, you'll be thinking - why didnt BMW M deliver the car like this from factory?

soooooo much better, not stupid look at me loud, no drone and a really nice purrrrrr on the v8.

i've seen stock exhausts go for around $500 in the event you ever want to go back to stock... cross that bridge when you get to it.

Hey mate, i literally did the OEM exhaust mod on mine last week and am super impressed with how it turned out.
I did the 2 pipe wrap method. I used some sheet aluminum to wrap the 2 large perforated pipes and then used exhaust wrap (fiberglass heat wrap) and 3 jubilee clips (stainless steel hose clamps) on each pipe. I hacked it up myself with an angle grinder and wrapped the pipes up. I took the exhaust muffler to a welder who was keen on the job.
Then I fanged it back on the car and it now it sounds like a weapon. No drone when cruising around at 60 or 80 highway speeds. The demon only comes out when you put your foot down and cold start sounds mean too.
Highly recommend the mod whether you do it yourself or get a shop to do it.
Not sure whether the wrap vs weld-in-pipes method yields different sound qualities, anyone heard a difference?

Did mine myself as well, same way. I couldn't be happier with it! Sounds awesome. I picked up a mint oem exhaust to mod and saved the original.

I did the 2.5 oem mod yesterday as per the exhaustmods uk website. I was initially concerned there would be drone on the highway but I can safely say no drone anywhere! Quiet as stock when idling warm and a fair bit louder when under load. Absolutely would recommend the 2.5
