Theres no other route besides OEM. Decided to go with one new 330N Stabilus strut on one side and one "bad" oem one on the other like someone suggested. Works perfectly fine. Will probably replace the other "bad" oem one down the road as the Stabilus one gets more worn.

This thread got bumped just at the right time. Now that it's getting cold my struts are useless. It hit me a few times softly during the last round of maintenance but yesterday it slammed straight down while I was trying to hook up the battery tender.

I ordered from Autodoc, not sure if they ship outside of Europe but check it out. Stabilus 016717 I would think should render result elsewhere as well. Those are the ones.

I don't know if this is allowed but I just found the stabilus branded hood struts for our car with correct part number on Amazon. 18$ each free shipping.

GhostE92 Please don't buy those. They are the 9669ZC which are the 330N as discussed years ago when my hood launched off like a rocket ship after being sold them incorrectly by ECS. They sold several other people the wrong ones for a long time and may still be doing so. They even sent me a second set confirming they were correct, but nope..I had to buy the BMW part to get the right ones. Just about every site is selling them for the M3 when they are for the 3 series with the steel hood.
The real trick would be to find the ones helmsman listed, but they are, as far as I can tell, not available anywhere in the US. I'm not sure why. It should be something that could be ordered through any vendor of Stabilus. Maybe that's something we could look into.

Stabilus 966 9ZC was the 200Nm part, and that the 550 part number was the 330Nm part that some people were getting from vendors even though they ordered the 795 part? Mine arrive from Pelican today I'll report back if they're the 330nm or 200nm part since they were listed as PN: 51237900795 - Stabilus 966 9ZC

Just opened my box, they are 330nm - is there actually an aftermarket stabilius part number or not?
The bag is labeled with the 795 part number.

Yes, though unfortunately nobody has them in the U.S., but they are plentiful in the UK. I looked at maybe buying a few to be shipped, but they all want $100+ to ship them. Even if I bought a dozen or so it wouldn't make sense at a $30 USD break even point..

So based on Google and this thread it seems like nobody in America is selling the Stabilus 016717. FCP Euro might have them but they're listed as $65/piece. At this rate I think I'll try installing just 1 and see how it goes. I may remove the two existing ones I have and see if one is noticeably "worse" than the other and just replace that one.

Every e9x owner will go through this once. Pony up for the OEM part from a place like FCP or you'll end up going back and forth with a retailer trying to source the 200N instead of the 330. At least we're all in this together.

Ugh paying ~$140 for hood struts when a metal stick would solve this problem makes me think I just need to retrofit a hood prop from a Nissan Versa.
Simplify and add lightness.

Why buy an M3 when a Versa will also get you from point A to B?

I'm just pointing out the frustration that two mechanically identical parts (except for the internal valving/pressure) can cost 4x because of supply chain issues.
