Leaking power steering fluid.

I just let it spill, who cares. Then I go into the stealership service center and pretend I have no idea why it looks like some liquid is spilling from that bottle and have them fill it up. LOL

Fluid leaks at the track are frowned upon and I am not going to risk ruining the pump due to fluid loss.

Any brake reservoir will suffice, I pulled mine from Yamaha crotch rocket parts in the garage. Might save you a few bucks over the dealer.

Also, part number 9873 at Napa is now some sort of filter, two stores I've been to do not carry elbow or L fittings that small (5/32").

9873 was still in stock and the correct part at my NAPA and is on their website.

I checked online, 9873 pulls two parts, a filter and the elbow. Use NBH9873. My two local stores hired employees from the bottom of the barrel

I'll find out next weekend if this setup works as expected.

I really don't like the idea of having a "sock" around the reservoir. It might work but it doesn't look nice and doesn't get rid of the problem.
This idea is good and looks nice. I have two questions, What's the idea of having such a long hose? And second question, how does the fluid return to the reservoir?

It is a pure overflow solution. Long tube so you don't have to unattach to unscrew the cap.

Just wondering if this is still working for most of you that have done this mod?

I purchased all the exact parts and installed everything just like the pics and I'm still getting fluid spilling out the vent hole on the power steering reservoir cap. This is after a track day this past weekend. The one thing I do notice that might not be ideal is that the elbow that goes into the vent hole seems to fit a little loosely in the hole. I have also taken the rubber cap off the small motorcycle reservoir to allow it to breath.

Its a great solution, mine is still working perfectly.

Go to autoparts store and look thru the connector bin (probably in the back) and find one that fits a bit more snugly. Take the cap in with you if need be.

I need to do this as well, the cloth rag + zip ties just isn't doing it for me, even though it stops it from splattering my entire engine bay.

For me the results are mixed. I got a problem that hose was falling off the small reservoir and making a mess in a different part of the engine bay. Now I fixed it and it is working.

In regards of fluid going back to main reservoir, sometimes it does by it self, sometimes I need to use syringe and do it manually.

The reservoir needs a well designed baffle, not a filter.

The reason why fluid comes out of the cap is fluid is coming into the reservoir at high pressures and then gets forced through the breather hole in the cap. The white disc at the bottom of the OE reservoir is a baffle.

If you ever see the PS fluid foaming, that is the fluid being aerated, not overheated.

Chase Bays says they make a reservoir with better baffles. Have seen some mixed reviews.

On my E46, I've significantly reduced the amount of PS fluid leaking by lowering the system pressure. For a track car, high RPMs will maintain high PS system pressures. An under drive pulley might help but also may introduce cavitation at lower RPMs which will quickly kill the pump.

The correct way to do it is to resize the pressure relief on the pump. The pump is a positive displacement pump, there is a pressure relief that relieves back into the pump suction. This sets the system pressure. If the pressure relief can relieve at a lower pressure then you add some steering effort, minimize the likelihood of cavitation at the pump, and reduce the return pressure back into the reservoir and reduce spillage.
