F1 2022: Australian GP - Melbourne (Apr 10)

https://www.formula1.com/en/racing/2...a/Circuit.html

Quote:
Melbourne’s Albert Park Grand Prix circuit is undergoing its biggest transformation since joining the Formula 1 calendar in 1996, with organisers hoping the changes will enable more overtaking opportunities and promote faster and more competitive racing at the Australian venue.

In total seven corners at the circuit are being modified and two removed entirely ahead of the Australian Grand Prix on November 19-21, with the changes predicted to make lap times over five seconds faster and average speeds up around 15km/h.

The most obvious change to the parkland circuit will be the removal of the chicane at Turn 9 and 10 to create a sweeping right hander instead, as well as the possibility of an additional DRS zone. Meanwhile, there will also be a widening of the track at Turns 1, 3, 6, 13 and 15 – while Turns 13 and 15 are set to have their cambers altered to allow multiple racing lines.

The widening of the track at Turn 6, meanwhile, will increase speeds dramatically at that corner, up from a current minimum speed of around 149 km/h to 219 km/h.

As a result, the average qualifying lap time is expected to decrease by around 5 seconds, from 1m 21.0s to 1m 15.8s.

My prediction:
1. LEC
2. SAI
3. VER
4. PER
5. RUS

This circuit is basically sector 1 from saudi arabia but then 3 times
(even with the track being made faster I think...)

Of course RB and Ferrari had the cars set up differently, but LEC managed to gain 0,5 / 0,6 sec in sector 1 every time, so that could be 1,5sec per lap....potentially...
Obviously RB will run more downforce here etc etc, but 1,5sec each lap is a lot to overcome...

It's going to be interesting to see for sure how RB is going to perform. Also what their tire wear will be.

I'm also eager to see what SAI can do. He managed to close the difference between him and LEC a bit. Imho he has to grow in a season, but I think he can eventually be faster than LEC. But maybe now not yet

Sector 2 looks like it will benefit Redbull given their strengths in Jeddah.

I do think this will be a strong Ferrari track as of right now. Not confident that Sainz can take on Max but pleasantly surprised with Checo's quali lap and his race pace in Jeddah before that screw up. Would be nice to see checo on the podium!

I'm the first to say that RB is tactically the strongest team, but even their tactical analysts can't predict if (rather...when ) Latifi is going to hit the wall

New floor for Mercedes maybe? Lets see if they can close the gap some. 6 way battle for race wins would be fun to watch.

For race win they really have to work on their tactics imho.
Wrong tyre choice (and consequently like driving on ice) and missing a pit window is not something you can afford if you want to be a serious contender for race win.
Even with a good car.
And I think that is by far merc's weakest point.
I still think they will get that car sorted (to me it's more a question of when than if, even with this year's severely strong rules about budget caps, test/windtunnel time, engine freeze etc), but they make (and have made) such stupid mistakes that have cost them the win or points multiple times (I'm also talking about previous years).
They just don't really seem to learn from them. (ok, Russel hasn't made real mistakes yet I think)

They definitely have good race tactic history. First and foremost they need to get porpoising under control. Then and only then can they address other deficiencies in the car. I guess the $25k question is, how much are they losing to porpoising alone.

Is it Australia that they're putting the new floor in? I read that Imola was the big upgrade for them.

Some media have said possibly in time for Australia. I guess everyone won't know for sure until they show for race weekend.

Has anyone clarified the difference between RUS and HAM setups @ Jeddah?

Not that I have read. The two cars could not have been that far off. But maybe they are trying radical setups for Lewis since he is unhappy with the car. Who knows?

It's just crazy how much pace HAM was lacking compared to RUS.

Really is shocking especially given that HAM is 777-777-7777. Our dear friend MKSixer used to tell us that it really has little to do with the setup/car. So I wonder how he would rationalize this.

Looks like the RB18 is going on a diet but expected at Imola.

This prediction seems the most reasonable. But I don't think Sainz is good enough to extract enough out of the Ferrari to keep max behind.

A 6 way battle will be insane to watch. Hope this is the case.
