Good news! Engine has arrived and is being installed. They loaned me a 2020 330i so I got to experience the electric steering. Now i understand the lack of feel that it has. I am guessing the steering in the newer m3 and m4 is similar. The tech is cool, i like the hud, the active engine sounds are kind of cool but it doesn't have that visceral feel that I get with my m3. It seems to be a comfortable daily cruiser. interior is smaller than I expected.
Bad news Warranty guy who was inspecting my car said they wont honor warranty with my modded oil pan with the dipstick or underdrive pulleys, so they cannot be installed on new engine unless i want to void the warranty. I found it interesting that test pipes were ok? the new engine looks like it might be a 2010 or newer based on the oil cover with the yellow writing. Not sure how accurate that is though, I believe all the engine pictures i've seen with yellow writing on oil cover have been on engines newer than 2009 as far as I am aware. I am hoping the shop will let me see it in person. Anyway, I am chomping at the bit to get this thing back and break in the engine. Last edited by bmwm3s65; 10-01-2020 at 09:41 PM.. |

Can you imagine how the OP will feel after starting it up again and driving home? Talk about a potentially unbreakable bond (trauma bond?)! I suspect in 1000 years archeologists will find him buried in his M3

Not sure yet. definitely after the warranty period. Even though I probably just got lucky and the main bearing went, I cant help but wonder, if I had not had the rod bearings changed at 50k, maybe the engine would still be running. I babied, I mean really babied it and so did the previous owners to, my knowledge, and this still happened. I think I am going to take my chances and wait awhile longer before changing them.

Thanks. They let me into the shop briefly to see my old and new motors in person. It was really cool to see the engine outside the vehicle it actually looked pretty clean. looks like the ofhg and the vcg's needed to be changed. It is interesting that they dropped the tranny from the bottom first, then pulled the engine from the top with the front end still on the car. Most of the forum posts i looked at showed a rig that drops the subframe, engine and transmission altogether from the bottom. I am going to miss my under drive pulleys, more so for the heavier steering than the hp it freed up. I am still thinking about buying my old engine back if I can afford it. I convinced the service manager to take a lot of pictures during the install. I should hopefully have some more pictures next week.

I got the car back Thursday. Funny story, i went to pick up my kids from daycare after getting it back and it started smoking from underneath. At first I thought it was normal and chalked it up to the re-assembly, however, when i got home i decided to check underneath the car and sure enough, it was leaking oil. I pulled the transmission cover and found that the transmission oil cooler lines connecting to the transmission were loose. I tightened it up and refilled the transmission fluid that had leaked out and told the shop about it. I had a road rally today and drove it about 200 miles so far. biggest difference i notice between the old and new engine is the whine from the straight cut cam gears. It appears to be louder on the new engine. it also warms up twice as fast. BMW also gave me my old engine. It is still sitting at the shop. I will hopefully be able to pick it up and get it on the stand in a few days so i can pull the bedplate.

I wonder why it warms up twice as fast. Mine takes an entire ~15 minute drive to work and it’s not to operating temp when I get there. That’s something I’ve always wished this car would do.

depends on the oil i'd say. the BMW twinpower definitely warms up much faster than the Castrol.

i exaggerated a bit, it definitely heats up noticeably faster but not twice as fast. It also goes slightly past 210 when driving normally, which may be part of the break in? that never ever happened on my old engine. the old thermostat was a OE brand and was replaced at 30k miles so it only had about 47k miles on it when the engine failed. I wouldn't have expected it to have started failing after only 47k but who knows.

Yes, I would like to confirm that the #1 main bearing caused the #1 rod bearing to fail. I figured if it didn't I might inquire about the BE warranty. I figured I could also sell it for parts or a rebuild if the core is good.
