Update:
I downloaded and burnt on Apple branded DVD-R at 2X. Popped in and no software update or 5 mins waiting time etc. It just worked fine. Red light camera info etc are pretty cool.

I noticed the supplier said he removed a few POIs such as funeral homes so it will fit on a single layer DVD. How large is the full OEM version. I am surprised it doesn't fit on a DVD. Anyone have the full, unedited version?

I used regular DVD-R and had no problem what so ever. Not even asked anything to update. (used Apple DVD-R, MacBook Pro with Disk Utility to burn).
Hey Swamp2, I'm in San Diego as well (Del Mar). If you like, you can test it with my disc on your car.

Perhaps the car can only read single layer discs. All the OEM points of interest (without camera information) would probably fit on a single layer discs. But all OEM points of interest with camera information would not. Of course I'm just making stuff up right now. I'm too lazy to stick in my original 2008.1 disc to see how large it is.

Anyone has a hash of the image? I burned it on a DVD-R and it is not working using Nero but I will try again with Active ISO. If anyone has the checksum of a known working image, please let me know. If it doesn't work, I will try with DVD+R tomorrow.

A quick look through the file structure of the DVD did not make it apparent how you can edit the disc contents and include or leave some POIs and other information out. Languages were at least labeled so that edit should be easy. I wouldn't mind missing out on another language but I'm a bit hesitant to use someone else random idea of what are and are not important POIs. Are the speed/traffic cameras a custom/user added enhancement of some sort or do they come on the DVD from BMW? isugoo: Just verify your DVD version, pop it in your computer and tell us how much information is on the disc.

OK.
I burnt total 4 DVDs and all burt without any error at 2X (Macbook Pro Aluminum Body laptop, Disc Utility used to burn, Apple branded 4.7 GB DVD-R). ISO size is 4.29 GB After burning the disc: Disc name is: CD_6565 Disc size is the same 4.29 GB. I just checked my nav dvd disc that came with: Disc name is: CD_6565 (same as the one I downloaded and burnt) Disc size is: 4.44 GB Funny thing is my 2008 E90 M3 came with 2009.1 (part # 65 90 2 147 677) but doesn't have red light or speed camera info at all when I checked it again. UPDATE: I just checked the part # of my nav disc that came with my car in Tischer's website. It clearly shows: "2009-1 NAV DVD CCC" but it didn't have any red light, speed camera info. So any 2008 M3 owners who has 2009.1 disc, this one is still worth downloading it. UPDATE 2: Try to burn on Sony DVD-R at 4X and failed. So I used same Sony disc at 2 X and succeed. I guess really slow speed makes it more stable on this ISO file.

Anyone else notice longer seek times when inputting destinations as compared to the OEM disc?
Reason being - this can contribute excessive wear to the DVD spindle after time.

Tthe DVD based iDrive usually takes long time to begin with so I didn't really pay attention. It's just DVD disc. I didn't know it matters much. Just like CD players. We use all kind of brands CDs but it always works just fine. Do I have to put original Disc back time to time?

isugoo: You probably bought a very late production 2008 M3, and therefore, was fortunate to get the 2009.1 navi disc. Of course the OEM navigation disc will not have the camera information...that was a hack/modification done by somebody on the net.
tom@eas: I haven't noticed any longer seek times compared to the OEM disc. But even if there was, I would not be concerned about the drive's motor breaking. What it boils down to is that our cars have a DVD reader drive, similar to a computer's drive. The car's DVD drive is not likely to fail upon normal usage. This post was mainly for anybody who did not have the 2009.1 disc and wanted to get the new map data. The fact that it has camera data is nifty but not that important to me. In Houston, my navi map shows there are only 4 red light cameras. That is clearly not correct, because there are at least 15 that I know of. So therefore, the camera data on this disc is not up to date. |

Still funny thing is: My previous E92 335i built date was May 08 and came with 2008 disc. My current E90 M3 built date is same, May 08 but came with 2009 disc. I purchased E90 M3 this June so maybe dealer put newer disc by accident (lucky me). And maybe that's why my iDrive didn't say anything about upgrading software, turn off car for 5 mins etc. on the screen to begin with.

OK if the 2009 DVD is only 4.4 GB why did the person who customized/added the cameras need to remove POIs. I can't believe the locations of speed cameras takes over 300 MB...

Update
I turned on my car last night and when I used my iDrive knob to push to the Right to access the Navigation, the messge on the screen said something to the effect, Please insert navigation disc.
My navigation disc, of course, was already in the car. I pushed eject, and re-inserted the disc. All was fine again. Weird. |

I'll keep using it and report how reliable it is on mine. So far running very smoothly. Maybe burn it again at 2X. We used exact same software and I failed once when I did at 4X so try 2X.
